"[Apple] insisted that local carriers foot the bill for advertising and fixing under-warranty iThings "

What nerve. If the iThings are under warranty, they are your responsibility, Apple, and no one else's. I am frankly appaled at the idea that the carriers didn't tell Cupertino to stuff it, accompanied by a vast ad campaign telling the public what Apple had demanded and why they had refused.

Public opinion can be useful. I doubt very much that South Koreans would have appreciated that Apple was trying to force someone else to bear the costs of Apple's warranty.

And I used to wonder why in Korean dramas they always gave the bad guy an iPhone, while everyone else had a shiny new Samsung or LG.

(They seem to have stopped that now, probably because people were complaining about spoilers.)

With a Hollywood movie, it's the opposite...

"Apple won't let bad guys use iPhones in movies, 'Knives Out' director Rian Johnson says"

"Trying to figure out who the bad guy is in a movie? Look for the character that hasn't touched an iPhone."

In Australia (who usually copy British law) there is a provision in our consumer law that the Brandname carries manufacturer ownership. That is if is says Sony or Apple on the product then you can sue Sony/Apple and not Sony(Australia) or Apple(Australia) - you can go after the parent entity.

They don't like it when you find out, and lodge a small claims.
