Sick of GNOME, Snap and Flatpak? You might like Linux Lite, but beware rough edges

ud6

People (except newbies and windows users) hate snap. Ubuntu is trying its best to get rid of its home users.

What I don't understand is what the advantage of Linux Lite is over mint XFCE? Same kernel, same base OS, but mint more polished and in speed tests I've seen, mint is slightly faster. Also mint does not come with stupid snap by default.

Anyway, Canonical have to make a serious choice now of keeping snap and losing many home users and possibly even alienating downstream distros, or abandoning snap and remaining the hub around which most other distros are based.

FOSS could be an unintended victim of EU crusade to make software more secure

Problematic regulation

While I'm not against EU regulation, having been involved with it for many years, I can say that the beaurocracy means that lawyers and polticians end up finalising these regulations without thought to the technicalities. I remember when they wanted just one variety of oak trees along European roads.. an ecologically devestating proposal. Also, the Water Framework Directive was fiddled with for so long that there are internal inconsistencies in the legislation.

Like Ubuntu, just a bit less hassle: Linux Mint 21 'Vanessa'

Not just for newbies

Strange so many say for 'non-techies'. Truth is, almost all linux distros (and indeed even Windows)!is suitable for techies. If you programme and use terminal, you can do all this with almost all distros (and windows!). What is meant is ... It's suitable for non techies. Fundamentally it's user friendly, versatile and stable, even if you don't use the terminal. But why would a techie choose something that's not stable versatile or user friendly? Ok, you might be experimenting...but from software to programming it's as good or better than any other options.

Mint has become bigger.. but as title suggests, instead of just being 'based on' Ubuntu, it is actually a large improvement on Ubuntu.

I constantly look around for faster or better packages than Mint, but things like MX Linux etc, but they suck in comparison. Mint consistently outperforms others whilst being user friendly. Only drawback is that packages in repository can be a little dated. But unlrss you want something specific in new software versions that you can't get (and don't want flatpak), best to go with stability and usability.

If you doing work, Mint. For personal use, Mint. For programming, Mint. For customizability, Mint. For stability, Mint. But hey, some people like their distro solwer or less stable, so choice is yours.

Linux Lite 6.0: It's quite pretty, but 'lite' it is not

Edge for Linux is Microsoft

Reason people often want a Linux alternative to Windows is either to work on a small cpu or to avoid privacy/security issues. Obviously this isn't designed with first reason in mind, so nstalling Edge for Linux would not satisfy users concerned about privacy/security as it is still Windows.

Why the Linux desktop is the best desktop

Who's reading this article

Whilst entirely true, the only people who are reading this article are those who already use Linux. Most windows users know little about computing, have never heard of Linux and would never read an article on computing.

Since running windows on virtual box (specifically so I can use Excel and its VBA) I see zero reason to use Windows or mac as my main OS.

Re: For corporates, it's Excel, not Linux, that is the issue

100% Excel is one of best software packages ever made, especially because of VBA programming. However, I literally just use it to write and run macros. Admittedly LibreOffice not as pretty or functional, but it loads faster and uses less RAM so for general use I use linux/LibreOffice. Never see that many corporates using VBA or even knowing it exists, so seems wasted money and increased vulnerability for them.. it's just they don't know any different.
