DB2 is a poor fit for "modern" workloads

... particularly any flavor of ORM, because joins are so expensive. That, in turn, is down to an isolation model designed for batch. I have always thought that IBM would like to build -- or, better, buy -- a more modern engine and that, whenever that successor technology might drop into their laps, they would give it all new branding, hence the slow-rolling of DB2. Also they would lose some new sales if the customers understood what a hardware hog it is.
