BOFH: It's Friday, it's time to RTFM

Re: ACRONYM is NOT an acronym

Yeah I, and I suspect many round here, have worked with various systems named that way.

Also some with really poor names once you realise the acronym - DPS being one of the most bland I've had the mispleasure of.

BOFH: Selling the boss on a crypto startup

I'm shocked that Simon has let the cat out of the bag about how little effort it usually takes to "fix" the regular "insurmountable" problems that lusers encounter on a daily basis.

It's the Scotty Principle all over again!

Re: Gaaaah “US English”

Legacy English?

If human sacrifice was a requirement of fixing that level of issue, well there wouldn't be anyone left alive for it to be an issue for ...

Everyone back to the office! Why? Because the decision has been made

Re: that jerk with the annoying voice and that other bastard who sniffs all day.

How about the whole fracking team that don't know how to silence the beep of every single message, and they keep messaging each other.

Re: who'd have thought less interruptions could boost productivity?

Still trying to even get our paid canteen back, despite working on an industrial estate with 10 microwaves between about 800 people (if everyone had to be in all the time) 600 seats and 400 parking spaces.

There is.a Greggs 10 minutes walk up a hill ...

Common sense, logic, care for staff, yeah clearly none of those apply to "leaders" - see The Psychopath Test.

Whatever you do, don't show initiative if you value your job

Re: Once bitten...

Similarly, testing a script to update a lookup table. But I ran it in the wrong window - Prod rather than Dev. The script didn't work.

But I noticed it immediately, told my manager who notified users immediately that there was an issue. It only took 30 mins to fix.

And whilst it was a clear demerit I didn't get hauled over the coals as I didn't faff about or make up stories.

Plus as a lesson learned, we set the default telnet window borders to be red on prod systems going forward.

The next time your program is 'not responding,' (do not) try these steps

Ad-tech firms grab email addresses from forms before they're even submitted

tezboyes

Re: Unique emails

Also assuming address harvesting code that is well written. I still receive spam to "addresses" that are in fact message-ids.

Some of which date back to the 1990s (I set up sendmail to generate IDs using yyyymmdd.hhmmss.random@mydomain back then).

Re: Autocomplete

Yes a browser function, but a website issue ...

With a potential for any of those data items to be asked for, stored and disseminated without you knowing. That latter being the real problem.

There was some hoohah about it recently, but also a few years ago - which is when I first noticed, turned auto off and installed one of the password (and other credential) managers that does require human input.

BOFH: You'll have to really trust me on this team-building exercise

tezboyes

There was a suggestion we could all go Axe Throwing as a ln after work senior management team building exercise - that was quickly knocked on the head ...

Re: Ahh, Team building/break the ice exercises....

Or asking who you get to murder?

tezboyes

Re: Ahh, Team building/break the ice exercises....

Yes. Wellbeing Hour is all very nice, except that just means having to finish an hour later to get work done.

tezboyes

Re: Ahh, Team building/break the ice exercises....

Or just go with the classics. Can you hear me, I can't hear you, you're breaking up, Sorry, what was that. No I'll just have to reboot, the VPN keeps disconnecting ...

Yeah, the BOFH is definitely NSFW, when cow-orkers enquire why you're ROFL ;)

Re: It's scams all the way down

Sadly no opportunity to both Up and Down vote !

Banksy is clever, but his work at best is meant to be street art. We visited Bristol a few years ago, and completely by chance noticed one high up on a wall, it was a lovely little surprise - then move on.

Hence his absolute piss-take of the establishment art world and collectors with that picture that got shredded when purchased.

tezboyes

The what happens when is no longer hypothetical...

One of the first NFT games "F1 Delta" shut down with a days notice last month.

The company behind it are apparently going to offer compensation in the form of similar NFTs in another game. And that's a best case scenario, they could easily have just shut down totally.

As for resale value, well good luck with trying to sell any of that on!

Yeah I downloaded the Android; of the Lone Wolf versions a few years ago, good nostalgic fun :)

Re: It's time to kill the dragon!

Three months to get proper login credentials, yeah that sounds about right.

Sadly for my staff that is not the alternative skill progression that I allow ...

We're currently workshopping an improved process, yeah seriously, it's been going on for over 6 months.

I did get dangerously close to uttering a BOFHism in one session - and I'm on the lUser side of it!

UK internet pioneer Cliff Stanford has died

tezboyes

Re: Phone bills

LOL - to be fair there was more than one.

Clayton - of Turnpike, who was almost unfailingly polite, even when essentially calling a FW a FW.

Ashton- who was less so, he'd just call you a FW straight out, otherwise though it was entirely dependent on the quality of the question.

Both of whom, amongst others, were hugely helpful when I pulled the demon.tech.modems FAQ together. Which would never have happened if Cliff hadn't taken that gamble to set Demon up and let us all in.

tezboyes

Damn I can't remember my IP!

But I do recall, getting home in a Friday from a week away at work. First thint, order a pizza, then I could dialup to start the download of a week of Usenet (and Altnet for the pedants :) and putting the washing in whilst waiting.

The pizza would arrive about the time that News was sorted, so I'd eat that whilst reading everything but demon.local. Head out to the Mayfair, then get into d.l when I got back.

Tell kids these days that ;)

tezboyes

Re: Thanks for everything

Yeah I can't remember exactly why, but I was checking Groups for something a little while back, and I'm sure there are a bunch of my posts missing. Possibly over use of FW ;)

Re: Sad news.

That and the gagging orders, but I literally can't write about that !

tezboyes

Re: Sad news.

A little later than you, I joined just after they put a bank of 8 (should have been 14) lines in Malcolm's place in Sunderland - making it possible for us in the North East to join in.

Sympathies to Sylvia, who I remember from d.i.s.amiga back in the day before she met Cliff.

Apple seeks patent for 'innovation' resembling the ZX Spectrum, C64 and rPi 400

tezboyes

Re: Meh

Short answer Capitalism.

Longer answer, insane patent law that makes it easier for large monopolies to dominate than for small innovators to make a change.

So patenting anything and sueing others for using it is a profitable move, for the company and for the lawyers.

Especially when those evaluating said patents won't be able to check everything.

Re: Size of a real keyboard?

Being just a PFY at the time I got a CPC6128 - as it included CP/M.

i.e. the same o/s my dad had on the SuperBrain he brought home from his job :)

And also a lot of jealous alleged "people persons" who can't stand the fact that the techies are way brighter than they are.

Was his name really Sam, or was it Simon ...
