Re: The curse of overchoice

AC,

Just Google "Linux Mint", very comfortable for someone used to the Windows world. Unless your laptop is REALLY old (mine's from 2011), pick "Cinnamon 64-bit, download it, and install it. Or you can install it to a USB stick and take it for a test drive. You won't be sorry.

I've run Linux 68k on my old Ataris, then Red Hat, Suse, Fedora, then settled on Linux Mint. For me, "it just works". Friendly as they get. Have at it!

Re: Machine that weighs less than its operating manual.

I remember that madness. Server-size box, tons of padding, and on the bottom of the box, in a heavy ziploc bag, a 1-page single-side letter page (our A4, if you will). Man ,those guys hated trees...

While I'm at it, in VAX 11/780 class, we learned about a processor status register called FUBAR (serious business, not making this up), where you looked for values flagging errors on your CPU, hence the "FUBAR" moniker. As in "Failed UniBus Address Register". Some engineer slid that right past the Documentation folks... Who says engineers don't have a sense of humor?

Funny thing about Windows NT (WNT). It was written by David Cutler, who was lured away from his job at DEC working on VMS. Handed a check for a million dollars. WNT ... VMS? Coincidence? Cheers, and Happy Holidays!
