c) Climate change nonsense is NOT "useful science"
Easy to say that shite, you (many of us) most probably will not live to see the worst of the catastrophe unfolding. We could be working to create pragmatic, sustainable solutions but, yeah, easier to just ignore the problem and keep hating on Greta and the lefties or whoever...
I did that, several years ago, but unfortunately I could never user it as my main device. There are some android apps that I could not do without, that never worked on Sailfish OS. The store for the Android apps was attacked once by hackers (or something like that, I do not remember well, was too long ago and before the pandemic), so it never gave me confidence again, then Here Maps, worked ok and after an update never again, and never again could I get a GPS lock...
That is a shame, but if you use an smartphone, and want to use at least messaging and maps, seems that there is no escaping the known duopoly...
I spent some time exorcising MS shite from from my laptops, so for some months I distro-hopped a bit to see what would be better for a beginner. By that time, SystemD was already the default in most of the mainstream distros. I settled for an Arch variant, 1 of every 3 shutdows, damned SystemD would hang for several minutes, as you described. Went into forums and IRC, could not find the solution.
Then I started reading about it, but for a neophyte, it was quite daunting to make sense of all the discussions and flame wars. At the end, I said "I am just a home user, I want my laptop to shut down when I tell it to shut down, screw this SystemD garbage" and that is it, been using a rolling release distro without that shite SW for years, and normally it is a smooth experience.
Telemetry in windows 10, forcing updates from 7 to 10, when they artificially stopped "supporting" new Windows 7 installs in certain Intel CPUs, again, to force Windows 10 adoption, the Lenovo Secured-core thing...
Not evil, right? Just a bit mischievous. Gee, I should keep a list of MS misdeeds in a txt file.
Also: is Windows open source? At least past versions? What about Office? Yes, I thought so.
I think they are just being eclipsed by more evil entities, like Meta, Google, etc.
Not evil my arse...
In my experience (just a regular user that was sick of Microsoft's BS and wanted a better option) systemd was the one bringing unpredictability, sometimes taking several minutes to shut down, because it was waiting for $DEITY knows what. I do not remember the details, it was years ago.
Yes I tried to fix it, googled the damn thing and at the end I just decided to nuke it from orbit, there, problem fixed.
Again: I wasn't a Pro IT practitioner cursing its guts because I had to work with it, or even a power user, I was just a regular user expecting his laptop to shut down when instructed.
