I once worked with a lady whose partner was a Registrar at the local Accident & Emergency (as they were known in those days). Of the acronyms that were used two remain in my memory (both usually called in to the A&E by ambulance on a late Friday night)

I remember years ago, a big bank clearing firm got a Chinese contractor in to do some deep code in assembler for early ATM machines. The firm then proceeded to dick over the contractor in terms of payment.

When he left the code all worked beautifully and, as per the contract, was fully commented.

Only trouble was the comments were in an obscure Chinese dialect the required programmers to spend an awful lot of time at a certain greengrocers getting them to translate the comments.

My father used to say, I do not hire experts to tell them what to do. I hire experts for them to tell me what to do.

But have since run into any number of people who hire experts to tell them what to do, including a former boss who hired me as an expert contractor to write a report on the future of certain technology and then three weeks later said 'OK I think I now know enough to tell if you were right or wrong... of course i was still hired for those 3 weeks doing nothing while he decided whether I was indeed an expert in the field he had hired me in...
