American Airlines decides to cruise into Azure's cloud

Storm clouds

Lets face it, so far this year all of the big cloud providers have issues of one type or another, its not unique to Azure.

Goldman Sachs reportedly set to head up $60bn Arm IPO

More to the point how can a company that doesn't physically manufacture anything (except the odd prototype), and has a revenue of $2.6bn only make a profit of $300k ? The worldwide staff count is only 6,500 so even if they were paying everyone including the cleaners 100 grand a year that's only $650m. What do they spend the money on? CEO yachts?

Brit techie shows us life in Ukraine amid Russian invasion

The UK's help has been quite extensive, especially in the supply of things that go "bang" specifically the NLAW and other anti tank and aircraft devices which we have trained the Ukrainian locals to use over the last 7 years. While it would be nice to feel good about supplying shelter to the refugees, that is probably best supplied by countries closer to them, and we stick to helping them get Putin and his cronies out.

Re: A lot of the list is for illegal items

Having put a reasonable sized chunk of the list through google translate, and the fact that most of the list is in Chinese and some in Uyghur I suspect that a lazy programmer (!) when they were building this App copy and pasted some boiler plate code and files from another App meant for the locals.

The majority of the terms I could see are the sort of thing a Chinese citizen might search for, rather than a western journalist or Skier at the games as they could simply google the phrase when they got home.

They have a real downer on the "The Epoch Times" as that appears many times in the list and is freely available outside of China.

Re: An ElReg prediction came true...

Sounds like the school is doing it the hard way. Before COVID we had 400+ school owned and managed Microshaft machines, and run a WSUS server to control the updates. No problems.

Since COVID we've gone all BYOD, and blocked the BYOD's from doing updates via our WiFi to preserve bandwidth on the internet line. To be honest in 18 months I haven't seen any Update issues on those devices, the biggest problem is the kids installing iffy VPN solutions to get around daddy's blocks on certain sites, and the pc not reconnecting to the school network on Monday morning. - The windows 10 Network reset button is your friend here :-)

Am I the only one, that on first glancing at the article, read the company name as Crypto Con

Never heard of them before anyway.

Google Crapbooks v Microshaft Surface

In the world of COVID school IT labs are (or should be) dead as a Dodo, no shared devices and all that.

We scraped ours September 2020 and made everyone buy a device over that summer. - Where I am schools have been fully open and functional since mid-Sept 2020 despite the country having one of Europe's highest adult infection rates.

We produced a base spec which the parents ignored and now have an unholy mix of Windows laptops, Apple laptops and Chrome books. The only requirement was they had to install a school supplied and monitored anti-virus program (expect obviously on the crapbooks). So far, touch wood, no problem.

The reality of all the fanboi infighting of MS v Google v Apple clans is it doesn't really make much difference as long as similar tools are available on the students device, and they can do the tasks required. My only job is to manage the commercial grade firewall and Wifi network we have. If one of the little darlings breaks their device I simply point them at their mother and the shop where they bought it !

USA's efforts to stop relying on Russian-built rocket engines derailed by issues with Blue Origin's BE-4

Scraps of paper

Also apparently, bizarre as it sounds, they don't have a complete set of blue prints for the design of the final flight engines.

While there was a plan originally, as they started building them and encountering problems, they just "tweaked" things to fix them. With a lot of the fixes either stored in the head of the engineer making that part or on a scrap of paper.

Now with the original engineers all mostly gone, or retired to Sunny Haven in Florida there is no one left who knows how.

Mayday! Mayday! Microsoft has settled on a build and Windows 10 21H1 is inbound

Not just windows....

Oh god no, not another one.

Having said despite the common myth the fruity people are no better. I bought a nice new shiny Mac mini M1 back in January, yesterday it announced that it wanted to do its third or fourth (I've lost count) major operating system upgrade since then. Each time it does this its a 4GB+ download followed by 20 minutes of watching an Apple logo on a black screen with a slowly moving progress bar.
