Japan, Singapore, perhaps the whole world.... Get ready for robot waiters from Softbank and Keenon

Ken G Silver badge

Re: thus freeing up staff to focus on customer service

I also will stick to restaurants with people but I was just challenging the comment that waiters are essential for those parts of the job. I still believe cleaning is too complex for automation though.

Re: thus freeing up staff to focus on customer service

Why can't you follow the robot to your table, key in your order on it and wait for it to deliver food?

The only job in a restaurant that a robot couldn't do is the cleaners.

Thanks for the nautical mile to olympic swimming pool conversion though I think you meant to say 100 double decker buses since the pool is a volume measurement.

It's a Royal Navy, the Swedes and Dutch have older Royal Navies and the Portugese and Spanish navies are so much older they've cycled through Royal, Imperial, Republican etc and given up.

Re: Automation Issue

Pilot error is the cause because the pilot is responsible. If the automated system goes wrong, the pilot is making an error in leaving it active, if the instruments fail, the pilot is making an error in trusting them, if air traffic control route them onto the wrong runway, the pilot is making an error in listening to them.

Why not accept that different drivers have different levels of ability and that automated driving aids can make the average driver safer. Maybe YOU are above average and don't need that help, but I can't help thinking of the survey that found, when they were asked to rank their driving skill, 93% of the Americans said they were better than average.

Unfortunately the only point of messaging software is to talk to other people and other people don't have to agree with me on the value of privacy or the best tool for achieving it. I do judge people by which app they choose but I do that privately too.

Re: re. Which war?

Yeah, some of the context suggests the Emergency/Great Patriotic War/WW2 except Russia wasn't in that one. Usually "the" war is the current/latest one but that seems unlikely. If it was the one starting between 1931-1941 and ending 1945-1957 then I'm not sure how any of the equipment would hold up to sustained drone strikes, though it'd probably be hardened against cyberattack and social media manipulation. I thinkGM manufactured more trucks than Ford during that one, if you count all the subsidiaries; Vauxhall, Opel, Isuzu, etc.

Re: The thing about OpenOffice/LibreOffice

The issue isn't how well it works, it's how well it renders MS Office documents. I've had issues with the presentation of MS docs in Star/Open/Libre/Symphony Office and how they present when saved and opened by MS Office. When my colleagues and clients run MS then it matters. I've been using WPS office for years and I'm happy to check out Only Office as a European alternative.
