UK Online Safety Bill to become law – and encryption busting clause is still there

Re: Why?

They are all incredibly incompetent. Get your thinking hat on and plan to join them on the hustings. Crowdfunding as required. Good luck.

The world seems so loopy. But at least someone's written a memory-safe sudo in Rust

G40

Can we please stop fetishising rust whilst conflating C++ with C?

Rust: an unwanted emission with poor tooling from a source with a dreadful record in good language design. Appalling choices from a syntactic perspective and an unknowable runtime. Should have done much better.

And C != C++. Writing code in the latter language is more simply saving your code with a.cpp extension. Indeed, this has been the case since the previous millennium.

Why you might want an email client in the era of webmail

Yes, but

Can it a) import existing content directly from Outlook and b) does it use a sane structure for storing email itself? i.e. have they stuck with the wretched implementation which plagued Tbird back in the 90s?

Re: Working

Eh? Some sources for these claims would be useful. A concrete barge costs beans. I’m pretty confident to have very recently read that spacex no longer even clean the ‘soot’ off their machinery before relaunch. Can I source the last? No. Too late to do the math on the reduced payload proposition but intuition suggests several rather short burns to land is trivial in comparison to launch.

Pine64 takes another shot at an open tablet after chip shortages killed first PineTab

G40

Re: State of the Pine64 organization; why things are as they are.

Slightly OT but Pine64 is a fine example of how competing teams can fail to deliver. Thinking especially of the PinePhone - virtually unusable despite apparently having multiple distros available. And, going forward, there seems to be no future for anything powered by an A64. All but obsolete. A look at the specification gap is instructive as well. 2 and 5 MP cameras in 2022? And these barely capable of capturing images with any colour fidelity. Very sad but just not enough guidance and support from the hardware team. Not sure how they stay afloat. And I write as an owner of the original A64 pine sbc, so familiar with the history.

It would have if there had been a clear split between a system registry (hardware configuration, Windows status etc.) and one or more user registries (all the usual shite). Mixing the lot was idiotic from the get-go.
