Tesla steering problems attract regulator eyes for second time this year

Re: And you report on this because...

I was curious about a couple of these issues.

For the Ford escapes, are you referring to PE23013? If so it's not a case of doors falling off. It is a case of failure to completely latch when closing it (meaning it could open when braking).

As for the burning death, I'm guessing you're reffering to the dodge Journey? I'm struggling to find more details other than a few journal pieces repeating the same info, but from what I can gather, it was an electrical failure that prevented unlocking the doors whereas a manual override was possible by simply pulling the pin. Something which most modern cars don't allow to do (and Teslas don't in the back seats).

It's true that Tesla's failure are sensationalized, but when you throw out the window the decades of redundancy that car makers put in their cars in order to save some bucks, you get criticized a bit harsher when said failures happen.

Linux gets a lot of things wrong, but fwupd is simply fantastic. A simple to use tool to update every firmware on your pc is heavenly.

Laptop manufacturers (Dell/Lenovo) also like it because it simplifies greatly their Linux support.

I'm pretty surprised that after all these years, Microsoft didn't create something similar. I think they sometimes ship certain updates with Windows update, but it's very closed and doesn't support a lot of models.

Who cares about nanometers? Thinking they represent anything more than marketing fluff is wrong.

Have you checked the performance graph? They claim it's slower than this year's flagship SOC even though it has ARMV9 and 4 NM. Unless they have a microscopic TDP, then this process node is simply immature and inefficient.

Privacy

Violating my privacy as an adult that can tweak my Windows settings or install whichever OS I want such as Linux, *BSD, etc is one thing.

Violating the privacy of my children when they completely unaware of such modern computing issues is unacceptable.

I seriously hope they will be making a stronger stance on privacy or tweaking their privacy policy on this specific version considering the legal problems with handling marketing data of children.

Re: bloatware like Wayland

nonono

Even though I've never even looked into wayland I will hate it and spew nonsense in the comments because change is bad right?

*sigh*

The discussion of display protocols is always so stupid, that I prefer to listen at what the developers have to say, and most comments I've heard is that wayland fixes a lot of issues (tearing/performance/latency) at the cost of being very small.

That and apps can't spy on your keyboard inputs even out of focus. Oh and they can't query your cursor position at all times.

Re: "in some apps"?

"64KB for Tetris?"

Nah 64KB for fully multithreaded 64 bit OS with window management, color display, terminal, top, ls, cat, calculator, mouse and keyboard detection, which just happens to have tetris.

Still quite an impressive paper to fit Tetris in such a small place. Awesome!

Re: "in some apps"?

"But that ran CP/M, which is about as barebones an OS as you can get."

Let's go for even smaller :)

Here's Cyjon (https://github.com/Blackend/Cyjon) written in pure assembly. It weighs 64 KB with a GUI and you can play tetris on it.

Or if you want to be fancy and have a bunch of apps (including a web browser), there's KolibriOS also in pure ASM. The kernel weighs 100KB and you can install it on a 1.44MB floppy disk.
