They've only gone and made Doom run in a PDF file

There are many reasons to dispeair in this timeline...

...this is NOT such a reason.

Impressive stuff.

Re: Decisions, decisions...

Fair enough regardking Wine's limitations. How about running a windows VM on linux only for those mission-critical apps?

The Recall app's fuckery shouldn't be able to cause too much harm if you limit its exposure to only the bare minimum of your digital life.

AI assistants are not intended for you

I'll drop this here (admittedly comments by an astrophysicist, and not an IT professional, but I think she makes some good points).

Re: Bacon-topped ice cream anybody?

As someone who loves dipping their Maccas fries in their sundae, I can't say I'm hating the idea of bacon-topped ice cream.

A nice mix of sweet and salty.

Defiant Microsoft pushes ahead with controversial Recall – tho as an opt-in

Cmdr Bugbear

Will Recall record audio also (of course it will) ?

Assuming audio is also recorded, that means I will be very uncomfortable using my non-windows computer to make an audo or video call with a windows computer. Camera off, no screen sharing and single word answers I suppose...

Re: If they weren't removing the choice no one would bother changing

Just get a Brother printer/scanner. Doesn't matter which model, they're all good. fwiw I'm using an MFC-J4440DW ink jet + scanner. Printer works, scanner works.

Microsoft's Recall preview doesn't need a Copilot+ PC to run

Password safe killer?

So i take it this means I need to migrate my passwords to a pen and paper notepad in my pocket - I really don't want there to be photos of my passwords being stored in an uncontrolled manner.

Was there no one at Microsoft who looked at Recall and said: This really, really sucks

Cmdr Bugbear

Maybe this is a distraction

What I'm worried about, is given how widely loathed this idea is, what if this is really only a distraction from some other unholy spawn that they want to sneak into Windows.

From a personal perspective, I left Windows behind long ago. Just a shame that I need to use it on my employer's laptop...

Has Windows 11 really lost marketshare to Windows 10?

Re: I took the plunge into Win 11

I get why people write up scripts and fixes and little utils to undo some of the crap that Microsoft introduces into Windows.

I'm sure this way of thinking will piss of those that have limited choice (I'm forced to use Windows at work, but work are paying for that machine and the licence so cest la vie), but why not explore an alternate operating system that...well I don't know...isn't actively trying to screw you over.

Forget these apps and AI, where's my flying car? Ah, here's one with an FAA license

I'd like to direct your attention to a video that documents some of the shenanigans that happened when the the first aircraft were being developed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KH3Qou2omY

I'm seeing some similarities...

Evidently, Microsoft doesn't need me as a customer

I'm only a small drop in the ocean so they'll be fine without me.

And why did I misread "Lansweeper" as "Minesweeper"? I mean it's common knowledge that Minesweeper is one of the most important applications to run on Windows so I will forgive myself for thinking that this game had some suprising new capabilities...

For a first draft, I'll give it a pass mark. Not yet ready for the mass market but I wouldn't turn one down.

If you got this road registered, this would bring a new dimension to lane-splitting. Just crank on the juice and fly over the wheel-based vehicles in front of you.

It would certainly scare the shit out of unsuspecting motorists having one of these go over the top of your car...

I'm in a quandary with this. I trust neither party.

Instead, I'll just say this: Dear Google, your shitty business model is not my problem. If you want to play in this country, we will dictate the rules. If that's not profitable enough for you, well, that's your problem.
