DARPA wants to refuel drones in flight – wirelessly

WONKY KLERKY

In furtherance to my last and in support of my bid for the next Poet Laureates post:

I shot my laser in the air,

It went through f***k knows wot,

I know not where.

I say chaps (etc),

To my untutored brain cell:

0: Getting under/over and close with the drone to be refueled is fraught with difficulties.

For laser transference probs, see 1 below.

1: Ye boom method of energy transference is prob' best for present as 'little misses' with lasers can lead to big whoopsies.

2: Speed matching and turbulence 'wash' is the villain of the peace.

3: Ye drones come in basically x2 flavours ( / flavors if you're colonial ) + sub-flavour smaller versions of A below, viz:

Planing + Hovering.

A.0: Big Bugger like small fighter size - Usually IC engine of some type within.

Way Forward:

Bring to stage where able to look after itself and take on fuel (leccy or liquid) from tanker boom.

+

A.1: Smaller bugger version of above.

Way Forward:

Pref' as/above.

If they can't be brought forward (thought most prob' the case) because of speed + stability issues when maintaining station behind Big Hairy Bottomed Tanker (BHBT) then . . ......

How's about small slave tankers launched from BHBT's or in-flight docking to BHBTs?

+

B.0: Leccy + IC driven smallish buggers which have multi props and are essentially helicopter / hovering thingys by nature.

ie. No way can be refueled by boom from BHBT due to lack speed matching ability and inability to cope with BHBT wash.

Way Forward:

Small slave tankers - as/above.

Do hope I've not got too technical for you ( / y'all for the colonials).

On nearly all occasions of prang:

We will know who the injured party is; that being common to most accidents/incidents.

BUT

Where auto vehicles are involved, whether they be the agreed* perpetrator or even the injured party after being clouted by another same/similar:

We just don't know who to blame for said prang unless it can be proved that the offending vehicle's occupants:

were at time of prang / had been previous to prang / are in knowledge of other,

fucking about with the manufacturers pre-sets.

+

Manufacturers and sellers are putting these systems to market with such labyrinthine conditions of applicability that deconstructing the warrantees of any,

by any, especially the end user buyer/hirer etc, is, if not impossible, most certainly impracticable by, again, the end user/hirer*.

(*aka

The poor sod who,

if he hasn't modded the system and has no knowledge of other(s) doing such,

and

has put the vehicle to road under the recommeded conditions he was briefed with at purchase / start of hire - etc.)

and

therefore should be blameless but will undoubtedly be the first to put to scrutiny).

2: 'and a socket holding a auxiliary cable was shipped off to NASA's Kennedy Space Center for assessment '

COMMENT

Q: Is that where (ie. retaining anchor / socket cable end area) the cables are failing ?

If that be first area/prevalent area where cable failure found,

I do venture, without the facility of recourse to dtld as built dwgs:

.1: Failure be due to lack of free movement for articulation of cable at/near anchor point.

Lack of ability to move at socket/anchor would impose much bending stress at times on cable immediately adjacent anchor point.

.2: Single gripping to looped cables around eyes/posts gives over concentration of force
