Meta kills Facebook News in the US and Australia

Big_C

Re: Oh dear...

Why should any news media company be surprised of facebook looking for its own profit margin?

Those companies do that themselves all the time, why should they expect fb to develop an altruistic streak.

And if fb is correct that news are not that important in the all mighty timeline the potential loss of revenue for the media should be low.

So they can create their own profit with advertising etc. because they have always argued that the traffic directed to them from fb does not bring in the money.

Re: If he thinks that's bad he should try MacOS

MacOS is not free.

I assume the premium Apple charges for its hardware includes ample funds for the software and the lang support for it.

And yes, without an Apple ID a lot of services wont work, but how could they?

But it is at least possible to use different accounts for the computer and the online services.

IBM Consulting is done playing around, orders immediate return to office

I thing it is OK

There are several reasons why working in the office has benefits. From my experience a 3 to 2 home office days is a good mix of having time for complex tasks with fever interruptions and with flexibility to manage so off work tasks during the day.

In the office you/co-workers help onboarding new staff and initiate working in teams on complex tasks.

Being on site has a lower barrier to ask someone for input/help and discussions are more direct.

And some meetings are needed and useful. :)

X-ploited: Mandiant restores hijacked Twitter account after attempted crypto heist

Assuming that the X account is managed by the marketing department /contractor security is maybe not as complex as with other parts of the company.

Which is not real excuse, of course.

What does X offer as account security? Only 2FA? Or can companies/government user get better options?

Special client apps that include workflows for tweet management and offer better crypto secured access to send them out?

Now would be the time

Now would be the time to create a new, compelling, good first person shooter with nice single player action, multiplayer battles, no loot-box/shop nonsense.

He could use his AI knowledge to create some bad ass enemies, and maybe even optimized game flow with random elements, better render speeds etc.

Just a nice, once payed for, non online game.

Atlassian comes clean on what data-deleting script behind outage actually did

They lost a lot of trust - and rightly so.

While the CEO gave a nice explaination and most lilely anybody in IT can sort of relate to that blunder, it took them way to long to come clean.

And that "hundrets of engineers" working around the clock statement was imho bs.

I guess they make restore runs from a large full site backup but have capacity issues, so they can only recreate a limeted number of sites each time.

And the slow speed points to tape systems...? Lets hope it does not break and that the current backups do not need to be stopped during the recovery.

All Smartphones have the same feature.

And with them it is a very good security feature.

And while with Smartphones usually a user starts

the process, that killswitch can of course also used

from the company side. It is only software.

What is missing imho is a legal framework for such

actions, including sanctions, damages etc.

It is a slippery slope, because with smart devices it is

only a small step from retaliatory bricking to an up front

registration. Again: with Smartphones that is an

accepted procedure, but maybe there should be a limit

to a small class of devices.

Apple cracks down on iOS terminal apps because they can download code

This app install ban has to stop!

I only see two options:

a) Apple opens the Store for all kinds of apps, with appropriate age/access controls.

b) Apple can keep its walled garden but must enable a way to install other apps.

Either way: that shoul be the owners choice!

Every hack/Security issue shows that this approach is not a save situation while blocking many kinds of uses, like emulators etc. Today you cannot even get an i-App that shows eg. deep Sat info fot GPS/Galileo(etc), something my old Palm could do. Or there are no real WLan scanners because of hardware restrictions Apple wants to have (there is a work-around using the Airport app, as long as that remains in the store)

My biggest issue:

Right now all that privacy talk from Apple is bulls*it, because without a local firewall to my likeing any app can send stuff anywhere it wants.

And EOL devices are hard to use, with no official security upgrades from Apple, but could savely run a custom rom etc.

I have hope for some US court action, because the EU does afaik nothing.

The Store has to open!

Apple has to much power and market share.

I see two options:

a) Apple opens the Store (and iOS/iPad APIs) for all kinds of apps, with appropriate age/access controls, keeps it 30% or less, and can check for viruses - just like now.

b) Apple can keep its walled garden but must enable a way to install free 3.Party apps.

Either way: that should be the device owners choice!

And Freeware developers must pay to release their Apps?!
