The unit of measure for fatbergs is not hippopotami, even if the operator of an Australian sewer says so

Re: Skateboarding Rhinoceri?????

Pshaw. The proper plural of VAX is VAXim (or, in Saudi Arabia, VAXaat). Little endian, you know.

Re: Can we have some real engineering, please?

A long time ago, when I did compilers for a living, I had to explain the difference between an error message, a warning message, and an informational message. An error message is the compiler saying "this code is wrong and I can't figure out what you could have possibly intended." A warning message is the compiler saying "this code is wrong but I can think of something you might have intended." An informational message is the compiler saying "you might want to know this fascinating thing I have observed." A _warning_ means the code is _wrong_. Ignore _warnings_ at your peril.

Do you want speed or security as expected? Spectre CPU defenses can cripple performance on Linux in tests

Re: The Foundation of Computational Trust...

“Well, gee, if you don’t need the answer to be right, we can get it for you really fast.” It seems to me that “my data is mine” is part of “right.”

Come on, Amazon: If you're going to copy open-source code for a new product, at least credit the creator

The GPL would not change the situation, but the AGPL would; that's what it's for.

Excel is for amateurs. To properly screw things up, those same amateurs need a copy of Access

That's because their customers are not the users. The customers (senior management) they wow with eye candy that visibly (although not effectively) supports the data generation, consumption, and communication needs of the organization. The users are left to beat the mass of data destroying, bug ridden, user hostile misfeatures into something approaching utility in getting the day to day work done. Other office suites failed primarily because they valued the user over the customer, and look where that got them. It's actually quite brilliant.
