It's interesting that no one has considered this may be Apple's way of releasing the canary without being charged behind closed doors in a FISA court.
Being required to implement "something" to provide the backdoor required by the enemy that is the state and remain silent as to the real motivation or face retribution/consequences, what would you do? The most obvious is to use their own argument, "Think of the children", to justify it.
Apple's favourite testing ground for new technology adoption is Australia, why only the USA for this one?
This action has the distinct aroma of the gutter slime found in the Land of No Secrets Anymore where even the shadows lie.
