Singapore's banks to ditch texted one-time passwords

"digital tokens –apps running on smartphones that produce OTPs" but why can't they run on computers as well?

Why you might want an email client in the era of webmail

teomor

The email app is supposed to be a productivity tool. You can't say productivity and web based app in the same sentence. A dedicated app that can sit on the taskbar/dock that you can access with a single click or ALT-TAB to it is immensely more useful than anything running in the browser. Not to mention unread badges and notifications and everything else.

Microsoft makes Outlook Mac native email app a freebie

teomor

Native app? No, it’s a 950MB PWA!

Deploying disaster-proof apps may be easier than you think

Stateless applications

"Stateless applications" - Bbbut, are can we really call these "applications"? :)

Calendars have gone backwards since the Bronze Age. It's time to evolve

teomor

Use a good calendar app and stop complaining! Apps and services are 2 different things.

Teams (Exchange) calendar and Google calendar are only services. You can't expect them to play nicely together.

I don't have a problem managing both on my Mac stock Calendar app, for example.

Apple's Safari browser runs the risk of becoming the new Internet Explorer – holding the web back for everyone

I think it’s great that they don’t give in. A browser should be as simple as an email client. Websites should be cleaner, simpler, faster. And follow standards. For all other advanced features there is the OS to support them.

Chrome will soon make french fries (a saying in my native language which means it will start doing stuff a browser should not do).

Personally, I hate that Google and others refuse to make native apps and insist on making all apps web-based. But they’re only doing it to promote their own browser and also ChromeOS.

EU readies 'antitrust charges' against Apple Pay for locking rivals out of iPhone NFC chip

teomor

I don’t get it. They can decide to take the chip out and no one can do anything about it, because it’s their hardware, but if they put it in, it has to work with all other payment systems? What is the logic here?!

We can't believe people use browsers to manage their passwords, says maker of password management tools

teomor

Exactly. Windows needs a built-in password manager if we want this to stop.

This is one of the main reasons I am using a Mac (both at home and at work). Also, integration with Keychain across all Apple devices is a godsend.

The Fat iPhone, 11 years on: The iPad's over a decade old and we're still not sure what it's for

teomor

It's the iPhone for home use

I recently bought the 12 Pro Max because I had the very tiny 8 before. But after the novelty wore off (about 1 month) I started picking up my iPad again, on the sofa, in bed, even on my desk to take quick breaks while working. I can't imagine not using it anymore. It's a MUCH better iPhone. It's the iPhone for home use. Using the actual iPhone at home seems pointless, and I only see myself using it when out in the world. Otherwise, the iPad is my go to device.

PS: If iPad apps come to the Mac then there is a real chance Mac apps will come to the iPad as well, and that means more productivity apps on the iPad. Even now, I can already write some code, push/pull/commit from GitHub (etc) and I can do that from my sofa where the MacBook is really really uncomfortable! I can't even watch movies in bed on the MacBook anymore. It seems so heavy and clunky and weeeird!

Gmail and Outlook sitting in a tree, not t-a-l-k-i-n-g to me or thee

teomor

If you’re suggesting we use email “apps” in a browser as a more modern option, you must be off your meds. Most of us are using email for productivity, and having a dedicated desktop app to quickly switch to (and desktop notification/badges and all the goodies) is always going to be the better option!

If it ever comes to Gmail not working on my mail client anymore, I will ditch it in a blink of an eye, before ever thinking of opening gmail.com on my browser again.
