What a load of tosh. Link edit overlays went out in the 60s. The mainframe has not stood still, The zSeries is fully 64bit with loads of memory. It can handle work loads well in excess of Intel machines. I would imagine that the WIntel code would have crumbled well before the COBOL code. There are plenty of visual development tools for COBOL and Assembler. The mainframe remains at the center of many enterprises because is up to the job. Nowadays it is more common to serve up the data through APIs rather than green screens.
