It IS "progress" that we should not let systems run for years on end without getting patched. If you don't like it, it's probably because you did not design your system to tolerate hardware failures/reboots. More fool you for that nowadays - this age of microservices, containers and clusters where any given hardware node is as expendable as the next (thus your application barely bats an eyelid), if only you leverage the multitude of free tooling to implement it.
This architecture could even work on Windows if you're masochistic enough.
