What you need to know about Microsoft Windows 11: It will run Android apps

Tilda Rice

So, no Android or Tablet for you? Need a Google account

So, no Apple device for you. Needs an Apple account

Yes, lets pelt Microsoft for doing exactly what the other manufacturers do.

I knew this whole thread would be juvenile MS hating.

We even had the proverbial Micro$oft etc.

Still frequented by 11 year olds.

yoganmahew, bit too much drama in that.

> companies don't factor that in to their customer experience when they move to the cloud

Really? Effective planning matters in the cloud as much as it would have done for on-prem.

Also, never heard of multi-cloud?

>You cease to be a company in a business sector for your customers and become an operations company for your own inftastructure.

Most companies (at least in my vertical ) spend somewhere around 1%-1.2% on IT operations.

Just part of the cost of being in business, and certainly doesn't mean your primary focus isn't your actual core business.

IBM ordered to pay £22k to whistleblower and told by judges: Teach your managers what discrimination means

Tilda Rice

Angry techies/small people everywhere.

It depends on your role, and your aspirations.

When you reach a certain level, you are available. If you are 9-5 M-F task worker, different. But an exec/senior mgr different. If you're getting a salary approaching or north of 100k, you have to accept you are going to have to do whatever it takes, whenever that is. Or take a lower paid job/lesser role.

This default "tell em, thats my hours and you can stuff it" sounds like a juvenile reponse. But its El Reg comments section... so Linux FTW, M$ hrhr.

Tilda Rice

Re: £22K? Is that all?

Yer I'm with you Chivo. This is like those police videos where you only see the perp being bashed, and not the prelude. The mob with their pitchforks love to just go "yeah, yeah" stick it to the man!

The managers might well have made a cods up of handling her exit, but it might be she actually was a total pain / under performer.

But don't let the pursuit of facts get in the way of IBM and management bashing, carry on.

Some notes for you to read. Also, care on deforestation, as there are more trees in the Northern Hemisphere now than 30 years ago. Don't believe everything agenda invoked humans tell you.

The latest example is The Lancet's decision to publish a review of a theatrical performance called Lungs, which is about climate change. (Why a biomedical journal is publishing theatrical reviews at all is a legitimate question in itself.) The very first paragraph is already full of misinformation:

"With industrialisation, deforestation, and large-scale agriculture, greenhouse gas emissions have risen to record levels." [Emphasis added]

No, large-scale agriculture reduces greenhouse gas emissions. (It also uses less water and causes less soil erosion.) While an individual organic farm produces fewer emissions than a conventional farm, organic farms are less efficient. That means more land has to be converted to agriculture, which means that organic causes a net increase in emissions. Here is the conclusion of a recent paper in Nature:

"Here we assess the consequences for net GHG emissions of a 100% shift to organic food production in England and Wales using life-cycle assessment. We predict major shortfalls in production of most agricultural products against a conventional baseline. Direct GHG emissions are reduced with organic farming, but when increased overseas land use to compensate for shortfalls in domestic supply are factored in, net emissions are greater. [Emphasis added]

Re: Industry

From the Guardian (2013):

"Perceived wisdom is also that manufacturing disappeared under Thatcher. If so, it was something that had already started. In 1970, manufacturing accounted for 20.57% of UK GDP. By 1979 that was down to 17.62% of GDP. By the time she left office, that decline had continued - albeit at a slightly slower pace, down to 15.18%. Now it is much lower, according to the ONS - down to 9.68% in 2010."

Another article for you to read:

"Manufacturing’s share of GDP fell from 25.5% in 1980

to 11.4% in 2010. This trend is common across the rich

world as the production of goods is offshored to places

like China and India where wages are much lower."

Thatchers impact on "manufacturing" was modest, and in line with the same shift all the western world saw with production moving east.

She crushed unions sure, but also reversed decades of decline. It was a mixed bag, but you can't single her out on manufacturing in a wider context.

Re: So glad I got out of developing GUI applications long before all this crap

Yup, not sure why MS can't see this.

Old days. Open a Visual Basic app, drag and drop controls. Go

Now, open C# UWP app. Scratch head why basic controls are missing. Learn XAML to have an "adaptive" layout :/ Learn MVVM (what?) learn asynchronous pattern, and how that maps to MVVM (er, what?) Looks for datagrid, oh look there is a community one, add it, fight that it doesn't do what you want and the docs are meagre, and realise not many people got to this point to get community "help". Spend time wondering why you bothered and go elsewhere :/

Overly complicated.

Brexit bad boy Arron Banks' Twitter account hacked: Private messages put online

Tilda Rice

Re: "Twitter [...] have broken GDPR rules"

I know you're trying to be funny (and not succeeding very well), it would have been pointless making our own version of GDPR at the time, when we'd have to comply with EU regulation anyway.

And UK companies will still have to ensure non infringement going forward even if we leave the EU.

Doesn't matter what you think about Banks, nobody should be subjected to this kind of privacy intrusion/criminal behaviour.

Ex-Capita accountant who claimed £10k bung to leave was blackmail has appeal thrown out

Tilda Rice

Funny, how most people can't see wood for trees.

The money is for risk reduction. Capita must have been on reasonable ground to make the offer, knowing they would move to termination either way. The leaver has the choice to take money, or reserve the right to go down the legal route (often misguided). The company pays the money to remove the risk of later legal challenge.

The fact the amount was very low (10k is low in these situations) must have meant she was a total PITA and they were pretty confident :)

Guess who the Co-op Bank chose for £141m outsourcing deal? Can't be. Yes, it's Capita

Tilda Rice

"Jon Lewis, chief exec of Capita, said of the renewal: "This is testament to a new Capita, which is working more collaboratively with its clients, and is strongly aligned to the Bank’s values as a responsible business."

Gees, what waffle. How do these twerps get the tops jobs.

The banks values are around not trading with entities in occupied territory, nor businesses that impact the environment bla bla.

Capita can't align to that, as they don't invest. They should probably just gone on with "working more collaboratively with its clients" which is waffle for, actually do a good job this time.

Microsoft's cloud keeps printing cash, Surface not so much as Windows giant pockets $119m profit a day

Re: No win Win

What a couple of cynics.

Imagine the gargantuan tasks of keeping existing apps working, moving your dev tooling and OS architecture on over time? (I'm guessing you aren't coders)

How about the extensive work on Windows Core? One Core.

MS are terrible at support, hateful at licensing - but you do (I do) get the impression Windows is part of their DNA and they spend time and effort on modernising (watch Channel 9 for their daily standup meetings on Windows and how long builds take etc)

Anyway, don't let me get int he way of the myopic hate. I feel a bit sorry for the people toiling away inside MS trying to make something beautiful only to get Internet derision from the unworthy

Microsoft Surface Pro X: Windows on Arm usable at long last – but, boy, are you gonna pay for it

Tilda Rice

Clearly El Reg didn't use an 850 powered ARM Windows PC (they been fast enough already, long before the 8cX chip in this Surface X). I am using that in a Yoga C630, and its more than fast enough.

The insance 15+ hours battery life, means I can go to an all day waffle fest, and never worry about plugging into the mains

(the main issue being the horrible fat UK 13 amp plug, even if you can get a slim charger)

The biggest issue is software. (and I am resisting moving out of S mode, and keeping the device "Pure" without emulation)

* No Edge / Chromium dev to use (although MS are working on this)

* No visual studio code, god forbid even proper Visual Studio

The Yoga screen also wasn't high enough (Full HD) but these days of 4k and iPad retinas it just isn't high enough.

The Surface Pro X is my dream device (although it is mighty expensive)

If other Windows OEMs can make this for around 1000 pound mark with keyboard/pen all bundled, MS can get those apps out, and battery life is still 15+ hours - then they can "TAKE MY MONEY" :)

Anyone still ragging on ARM Windows in 2019 hasn't used one of the up to date devices, they really are fast enough, battery life is wonderful.

Just need those ARM Apps!!!

Microsoft says .NET Framework porting project is finished: If your API's not on the list, it's not getting in

Re: It was the EU who compelled Ms to make Ms.Net an open standard....

Try working at a large company with apps fighting over bugs due to differing VB runtimes.

It was the very definition of DLL hell.

You have to sympathise with MS on this surely. Trying to be progressive.

Then you don't, when their dev tooling roadmap twists and turns on a sixpence so regularly.

Dotnet Core + C# is a beautiful combo. If you rage over those, then you aren't a developer or someone with enough knowledge to comment.

Microsoft Teams: The good, the bad, and the ugly

Tilda Rice

Re: Finally made sharpoint useable

Yer I totally agree with that. SharePoint navigation is horrible unless someone in your org (or 3rd party) adds some much needed UI changes/sign posting/Intranet etc etc.

Teams just cuts across all of that, its easy to go back and find what you are looking for. Its in the work group folder, or project folder of the name of the "thing" :)

Tilda Rice

Pascal, really?

Surface is the #5 brand behind, HP, Lenovo, Apple and Dell. Not bad for a company new in PC hardware sales really.

Is the PC not relevant? Everyone at this company still has one, even though they is around 80% smartphone allocation, and growing 30% tablet dual users.

Teams isn't too bad. If you have 365, meetings from 365 email in your agenda, the SharePoint integration is actually works pretty well. It depends on the type of user you are, and what other services you have from MS. It is a pretty decent glue.

As always, its "fashionable" (certainly round here) to bash MS, but still a bit on the juvenile side no?

Funny was sat in a meeting today, hating on Android and the pain of enterprise management of it. I wish our pockets were deep enough to issue an iPhone to everyone outside of exceland Windows Phones were that device that filled the gap. Reliable, decent managability, decent in life support clearly stated (try finding that on a Sony website). Sad that MS gave up. But its not their fault people whined and moaned about it and it had an image problem. They were very decent.

Kiss my ASCII, Microsoft – we've got one million fewer daily active users than you, boasts Slack

Tilda Rice

Article links to the first site that hates teams. The first comment has 343 people applaud someone saying the article is trash (article whining it doesn't do this or that - when in fact it does)

Slack is cool.

Teams is cool.

Why does one have to exclude the other, they have different social networks, slightly different audiences.

This is like a grown up version of xbox versus playstation. They can both exist. Doesn't mean one has to knock the other.

Oh its for Reg sport. Carry on :)

Tilda Rice

Re: Feel old

IRC doesn't have document collaboration, a meetings/calendar/agenda section, nor integral telephony/video conferencing/desktop sharing, SSO, a company directory.

Depends on your job role on how useful you think that all is. But its much more logical to have "Teams" working on projects where everything is in one place. Much easier to navigate, and more discoverable than actual SharePoint sites in my opinion.

IRC was cute, when you're 18, WhatsApp didn't exist and a/s/l was the first thing you asked. But we've moved on from then haven't we?

Microsoft, GitHub staff tell Satya Nadella: It's time to ice ICE, baby. Rip up those tech contracts

Tilda Rice

Re: RE: I can think of only one reason...

Funny how you've aggregated everyone not of the lower echeleons, into having no morals or ethics.

God forbid a politician, manager, board member of anyone as you seen it in "authority" actually caring or doing the right thing.

That small minded view of the world says more about you than "them".
