Why we abandoned open source: LiveCode CEO on retreat despite successful kickstarter

Re: DarkBasic

“It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration.”

― Edsger Dijkstra

I never cared for this quote, as I learned BASIC in the late 70s and am still professionally writing code today. But I get his point, given the time it was made.

Mr. Williams is a Black man in the US, specifically Chicago. Unfortunately this type of treatment is far from rare.

Much like the nasty and ruthless ways many of the Tech Bros are making their fortunes. However, it seems to me the so-called "robber barons" were considerably more generous than the current crop (Carnegie-Mellow, Carnegie Hall, Rockefeller Center, etc).

Re: Edifact

I work for a bank. I currently have a request in the queue for a new program to perform EDI encoding on certain loan types that need to be submitted to the US Dept of Agriculture in this format. The encoded files are to be manually uploaded to a website (yes, this post is being written at the end of 2019).

I contacted the USDA about possibly using XML and inquiring about the existence of a web service that we could connect to and push the data, and met with blank-faced silence and eye blinks. They did make some noises about "modernization", but made it clear it wouldn't be happening in my lifetime.

Not kidding, unfortunately.

Maybe I should look into FAXing them some hardcopy?

Straight from the horse's, um. mouth, we have this: "Internet Explorer is a compatibility solution ... rather than a browser".

IMO, the tide turned from any kind of interest in the worker (a time which existed for a short bit during the 70s and very early 80s) when "Personnel" was rebranded "HR", and we all became expendable "resources". Sets expectations in both directions.
