Skype offers living room TV action

Graham Davis

Why not an add-on box?

OK, I know we tend to have too many boxes anyway, but will anyone upgrade their TV just to get Skype? If you want to keep the box count down, you could always build it into a Blu-ray or HD Freeview box. If Virgin could figure out a way to stick it into their cable boxes that would be a plus.

Panasonic patches cameras to block rivals' batteries

Graham Davis

Only a matter of time.

That will certainly put me off buying a Panasonic camera for a while as they charge way over the top for their batteries. I'll just wait for the third party battery makers to clone the chip.

London cab & bus trials for satnav speed-governor kit

What if?

My one concern would be on what happens when I leave a 30 zone with the pedal to the floor, would the car suddenly accelerate up to 60? Certainly having some sort of warning if you exceed the limit is a good idea as driving with your eyes on the speedo is not terribly safe. For those that don't like this idea, or cameras or whatever, please suggest some other way of reducing road deaths. Would we turn a blind eye if terrorists killed 3000 every year or protest about their human rights?

‘Unifying standard’ vital for mass-market 3D TV

Graham Davis

3D could make films less realistic

OK if you've got a huge TV and sit up close, otherwise you're likely to see little men walking around inside your TV. Even on computer games, where you tend to sit much closer, the viewing angles are such that the action looks miniature.

Virgin Media trials longer bandwidth throttling

Graham Davis
Happy

Up to 7 hours

It's not all bad news, as throttling is stopped at 23:00 hrs under the trial scheme. I suspect that this means that a large proportion of those who are throttled will be so for less time rather than more.

IT departments VAT-whacked

Graham Davis

This time, the timing was right.

Giving more notice was excatly what should not have been done as it would have put a freeze in sales which, especially at this time of year, could have sent yet another destructive shockwave through the system. Would you shell out a serious amount of money on something if you knew with certainty the price was about to drop? The shorter the interruption to sales, the better.

Ban everything that could be used for illegal purposes

I'm having a little trouble thinking of something that shouldn't be banned with that kind of reasoning.

Of Dell's self-encrypting laptop

Lost or found

As the previous commenter said, this does not prevent data from being lost, it prevents it from being found. Anyone stupid enough to leave a laptop containing highly sensitive information on a train will probably engrave the password on the case.

Stop

Oops

Unfortunately, in this example, the approaching car might appear smaller and would appear to be about to pass in front of the cyclist (depending on the lens). He would then brake and stop in front of the oncoming vehicle. I'm sure it could have many other uses, but when I cycle I'll stick to looking over my shoulder.

Speed cams ditched in Wiltshire

Keep them mobile and hidden

I quite agree with the above comments, it's absurd to insist that cameras be visible as this has precisely the effect stated above, of making drivers slow for 50 metres or so. Any road feature which causes sudden decelleration is going to cause accidents. If a pedestrian stupidly runs out into the road it may not be your fault if you hit them, but the extent of their injuries and whether they live or die is down your speed. Life is too precious to throw away because we're in too much of a hurry to get from A to B.

Dawkins' atheist ad campaign hits fundraising target

Graham Davis

How to argue pointlessly

1. Critically examine the loopholes in your opponent's hypothesis

2. Exaggerate these to the point of ridicule

3. Personally attack the individuals holding that viewpoint

4. Under no circumstances critically examine your own viewpoint

5. Stick to your ground rigidly, remember, you are right and they are wrong!

I'm all for free thinking

Let's all start thinking for ourselves and believe exactly what Dawkins tells us to.

Any creative advertisers out there?

So who will be the first advertiser to produce an advert that's slowed down by a factor of 32 or otherwise designed to get there message across in the few seconds as it flashes by on fast forward.

Just think for a moment

There is no shortage of intelligent people on both sides of the argument who have rational reasons for their beliefs. If you dismiss that then you are not one of them.
