Linux may get a hall pass from one state age-check bill, but Congress plays hall monitor

Have you got heard? The constitution is irrelevant now.

IGotOut Silver badge

Re: Can always relocate to Finland

Question is, are you weird enough to live in Finland?

Microsoft gives your Word documents an AI co-author you didn’t ask for

IGotOut Silver badge

Arse Elbows etc..

Microsoft: We hear you! We're going to remove AI from many products because you said you are sick of it".

Microsoft: Here is more AI slip you never asked for.

I really can't wait for one to go down, really, really badly.

Pass the key, passwords have passed their sell-by date

IGotOut Silver badge

Yeah great.

I have an Android phone, an Apple Tablet, a Windows Laptop and Linux desktop.

So I'd have to try and remember which one is set up with which and then find the correct device for that service.

Or I just use Proton Pass across all devices

England's school phone ban gets teeth, just in time to bite no one

IGotOut Silver badge

How dare you come on here with your sensible approach!

Seriously this forum today is like reading the comments section on a newspaper website where people rage about things that many schools have had an handle on for ages.

The law, if anything stops gobshite parents threatening teachers because little Timmy needs to know if his mum got to the gym ok.

If you need to get hold of your kids during the day, fucking phone the school. It's not hard.

Re: Details, details.

Who going to break into a school in the middle of the day, given every school I know of has a bloody great fence and electronic gates.

"Gosh: I hope that I am not coming across as a Tory MP!"

Eh?

You've come up advocating education, training and job opportunities.

A Tory MP would have you thrown in the slammer for 10 years, then put back on the street with nothing to lose by committing more crime.

TBH for the last 30 years, no matter which party, local and national , they see as cutting funding for prevention a lot easier than just upping Police numbers, because, well statistics. You can't show that you stopped 10 crimes, but you can show you arrested 10 people.

I remember several years back when us westerners were complaining about how a sports clothing company in India / Bangladesh (can't remember) was only paying a few Dollars a day in wages.

Huge protests, company closed factory. Job done!

Then a reporter actually bothered to go and interview the affected workers and found many were now jobless and destitute and that the factory was actually one of the highest paying employers in the area.

IGotOut Silver badge

Re: It's a moral panic jam.

Yes and no.

Company needs line go up. Line go up because company sacks workers. Company needs to look good, so says it's due to AI. Line go up more. More money for the ones that could easily be replaced by AI (LLM).

So no, while AI isn't taking as many jobs as they claim it will, it's a convenient excuse to get rid of workers and pay less money to those left

It why proper companies using the tech tend to use ML to distinguish themselves from the slop makers.

Re: Open Standards?

@keng

Yes, kinda.

Ukraine has a layered defence made up of multiple semi compatible systems. What Ukraine is very good at it integrating these.

There is a NATO standard Comms system where different systems can talk to each other, but Ukraine is not part of NATO, they use a lot of old Soviet kit and equipment from (some formally) non NATO countries.

There is also the issue of WHAT they are contributing.

Much of what they add is self serving, which in itself is no bad thing, but when say Intel are adding a large amount of code, a large chunk of that code will be for intel related stuff.

And who knows, when the AI bubble implodes, SoftBank will be utterly screwed, so the UK maybe able to pick ARM back up for Thee Shillings and Six Pence.

Re: The government is potty

@voiceoftruth

I take it you don't understand how laws work?

Going by your stupid argument (yes it is stupid) then there is no point having ANY laws. Well may as well not ban guns, as bad people will still carry them. May as well not have an age of consent, because peado's will still do it; may as not make armed robbery illegal, as bank robbers will still do it.

I wouldn't be surprised if China is just waiting for the US to run out of missiles and interceptors. It's pretty well know that Patriot stocks are running low and the amount of missiles and guided bombs they've chucked at the civilian infrastructure, must be a huge drain. Add in the fact the aircraft are running so many sorties that they will soon require extensive maintenance.
