I may be wrong as I've never used this kit, but it sounds like a "click to install" option, which my guess is it then pushes it out to all devices (I've used similar systems)
If you don't have this, you just have to manually apply the fixes to all your devices manually.

Many, many times I used to find s disk would work absolutely fine in one drive and be utterly unusable in another. Sony's were a particular pita.

I get the "We don't want to give a heads up" mentally, but equally, if I'm applying a patch, I sure as hell want to know what potentially could be affected by it.
I got sick of patches being applied, then coming across what is seemingly a random event, only to trace it to a "fix". It's even worse when the patch doesn't even apply to your environment.
There is nothing wrong with saying "Patch to fix security flaw in RPC handling" without going into great detail before people have had time to fully update.

Your partly right about caller ID but it can very, very easily enforced.
All numbers have to have an underlying bearer number. Some telcos INSIST that your "spoofed" number lies on top of your carrier number block.
E.g. 0800 123 123 must be presented on the companies bearer number e..g 01234 000 - 999.
This is no different on VoIP using asserted ID and source IP.
It would be trivial for telecoms companies to say drop all presentation numbers not on a valid bearer for financial services.
