Re: 5-ton cargo

Metric Ton is correct in the US, hence the need for the "metric" part.

Ton / Short Ton = 2000lbs

Metric Ton = 1000kg

Tonne = 1000kg

Long Ton = 2240

Hence there is no need to say Metric Tonne.

Re: Domain registration basic checks

No.

It's nice in principle, but who gets to say who owns what?

Trademarks only exist in their specific market.

Take something random let's say Boots the overpriced Chemist.

They could own boots.com.

Does that mean no-one else can own anything containing the word "boots"

Or how about ebay.com

can I not set up ebayscams.com. and having a site calling out scams on eBay.

Sure you could argue they should all be checked but with millions of domain names, how would this happen?

So nice idea in principle, but not really practical

OpenAI's Sora lets ChatGPT subscribers churn out janky text-generated videos

IGotOut Silver badge

Re: Next year's model

Look how many billions of dollars was thrown and the Metaverse and its associated ilk.

Is that still going strong? Or was it quietly dumped?

ChatGPT is kept alive by investors and freebies of Microsoft (server credits). MS sees ChatGPT as competition (there words not mine. So when the investors stop funding the money pit, or when the MS freebies run out, then what?

Where is the money coming from?

It'll quietly get absorbed by MS (they pretty much own the IP) and it'll die

With that dead, those dependent on it will either have to pay more money, or die.

Once that's gone, the others will quietly wind down the hype and it'll die a slow death. After all, this is Google we are talking about.

And where is "Apple Intelligence"? /crickets.

IGotOut Silver badge

Re: Next year's model

No it won't.

The amount of power and money required to generate even the most shitty video, can banged out by a half competent amateur in a few hours with a standard VFX package.

It's shit, and will always be shit. They are running out if training material to steal and now it's ingesting AI generated slop.

AI is just another Metaverse / Bitcoin bullshit hype machine

Once the investors realise they are not getting any money back, they will pull out.

See how much money they are burning through, then compare that to revenue. It's unsustainable.

Re: Wait

Look up "food deserts" in the US. This applies to a lot of retail.

It's a fucking huge proble we don't get in the UK.

I'll throw in (I'm not an Amazon user), but I can guess it's a problem in the UK.

I live in a large village (approx 4000 people). The main shops we have are a small co-op, a smaller NISA and green grocer/ butchers.

All are more expensive than the major supermarket by about 10%

If you want to vist (small) supermarkets its a 10 mile drive to the nearest town.

That town is a tourist trap, so great for a coffee or fancy furniture or clothes. Shit for locals.

So if you want say electrical goods, clothes, or just choice, well that a 20 mile drive.

No imagine if you dont drive.

You can take the bus or.....well tough shit.

And who are the least likely to not have a car?

Certainly not the people that can buy £90 jeans from the local town (yes that was the cheapest last time I looked).

FTC scolds two data brokers for allegedly selling your location to the meter

IGotOut Silver badge

, but the advert delivery systems do.

I discovered this via Podcast Addict which I've used for many years.

So how am I get (fairly) local ads then within the podcasts then?

Yup they are preloading adverts into the stream based on your IP address.
