@MacDiamond.
After a complete breakdown trying to do a 10 hour day (2 hours in traffic), plus being on call every other week, yet being expected in the next day even with 2 hours sleep, it got to much.
I had a new car, nice big flat, good money, but ultimately it meant nothing if every day I'm miserable, stressed and exhausted.
After the breakdown, it took a while, but I realised what was important.
I live in a little village, in a small but lovely rented flat, most of my furniture is second hand, as are many of my clothes, my car is old, but reliable and as for my job; I do my job, go home and it's done. I'm on 50% now of what I was on 5 years ago.
My house is full of art, I know loads of really interesting and creative people. When I can I go out to either live music or raves (yes I'm over 50), because music makes me feel alive. Most of this costs me next to nothing.
Financially, I'm probably the worst I've been since my late teens, but also the happiest I've been since then as well, and that's a trade I'm willing to make.
