Re: The misguided “One Laptop Per Child”

Or maybe the reason it failed was nobody actually bothered to ask the "clients" what they wanted.

Dammed if I can remember the podcast I listened to, but it was a lengthy discussion on why this, and so many other seemingly "good" ideas ultimately fail and the simple answer was "Western" centrism. Look at those poor Africans wouldn't it be amazing if we gave them laptops.

Great idea, until they don't have electric, they need repairs, maintenance, oh did I mention no one bothered to teach the teachers? Or that they didn't fit into any part of the curriculum. Give a bunch of kids a whole set of orchestral instruments, let's see how long it is before they can master them with no instruction.

IGotOut Silver badge

Is that right?

Given this was running hundreds of servers, had thousands of clients, and ran 15,000 campaigns a month, that figure seems pretty damn low to me.

Europe slaps AliExpress with €550 million fine for selling dodgy goods

IGotOut Silver badge

Protecting the EU sellers.

I do quite a lot of crafting and directly import foils for some of my stuff.

Around £2 - 3 for a hundred sheets. Need to spend £8 plus for free postage.

Off a "UK" seller, around £7 for 100 sheets including postage.

The difference in the item?

ZERO, absolutely fuck all, even have the same writing on the packaging, because all the UK seller is doing is importing the item adding 2 - 3x the price and going "UK seller" which they probably aren't.

I've bought some cracking stuff on AliExpress, but equally had some tat. But when you're paying a quid or two, you take your chances.

HOWEVER, all that said I very carefully read the descriptions (you soon learn the red flags) and avoid the obvious AI generated scams. I could see how people could end up by some dodgy stuff. For an example a VERY cheap MP3 player had the warning "Do not overcharge the device, it may cause damage". That is a huge flag it has no charge protection and is likely to burn your house down.

The batch API is blocked (likely by a WAF or security plugin), so it cannot be exploited. Keep WordPress up to date regardless."

So it seems that the "already compromised" is hyperbole.

About 1 in 10 releases completely Bork's the program, so the next release is fixing the previous releases fuck up. 1 in 10 doesn't sound bad, but the heap of crap seems to be updated weekly.

The kit were talking about here isn't going to be Windows based. God help us if it was.

A lot of the kit I worked on had 2 or 3 options and if one went miles out, they would usually ignore it (same with Windows in many cases).

But the more "dumb" kit will often only have one.
