VoIP done properly is FAR superior than POTS. If you've had crap calls, it's normally because they have used some crappy CODEC such as g.729, which is terrible at the best of times.

Fax over IP is ok when using t.38, but can be a buggerif it falls back if your carrier doesn't support it.

Modem over IP? Don't, just don't.

Oh the great part...it's down to your carrier...hopefully it will be a legal requirement to support g711a/u as a minimum.

Most I've come across have telephone poles, rather than underground ducts. Slinging a fibre along the old poles, is a lot easier than trying to feed through an old broken duct.

I'm little suprised you've gone to the effort of setting up you own DNS Server, yet dont understand the basic principle of dns lookup i.e. the CLIENT decides where to go to get its dns from. All a DNS server does is say "hey i can do your dns for you if you cant. But if the client has it set, then it will use that first.

Here Maps is free, has regular map updates, does live traffic, camera locationd and can be used fully offline.
