The Windows Phone keeps ringing but no one's home: Microsoft finally lets platform die

IGotOut Silver badge

The best interface

The Win8 phone interface was by far the best. Clean and customisable. Car mode made it simple to whack a bloody great icon to launch Here Maps (which I still use on Android).

Updates did depend on carriers, but this was easily bypassed to get them straight from MS, so none of the Android abandonware.

A lot of the issues was the lack of apps... review sites (including The Reg) bemoaned the issue, ignoring the fact many add one (think the 10,000 torch apps) were already standard.

Google had no interest in supporting it and people were moaning the could get Google maps...which I never got, Here Maps and the fantastic Here Transit were far superior.

However you knew the writing was on the wall when MS decided to putits own apps out on iOS first, then Android and then maybe sometime later it's own OS.

Re: Pitty, was a great idea

I have a similar thing on the wall. You press one part, light comes on, press another, light goes off.

100% reliable. Even works when the the WiFi and / or the internet connection is down.

Except for those times when strangely all the lights in the street go off as well. That must be a firmware update of something. Usually sorts itself out after a while.

Europol wipes out 30,000+ piracy sites, three suspects cuffed to walk the legal plank

IGotOut Silver badge

Do people have any concept of how the law works.

Oh they only seized this amount, or that amount. They didn't get XYZ.

When they make a initial raid / seizure, they only get what is initially available.

Once they have been arrested, then they can do a lot more digging and apply more more seizures. They can also start applying for "profits of crime" seizures

Think of it of "we pulled you over for a broken tail light" scenario. They find several bags of weed. This then gives them the right to go for a search of a house. They find more weed, a bundle of cash and several mobile phones. So they seize the phones and then then can go after the contacts....and on and on.

So in this case the initial seizures and arrests are a way to gather more evidence and go for bigger rewards.

Rubbish. Next you'll saying .org is being sold to a for profit organisation, .UK domains were sold and "given" away in the hope no one would notice the renewal of domains they didn't ask for and that ICAAN has deliberately sold a load of vanity domains knowing they can not only rake it in selling them but also when people argue over the right to own them.
