Many are missing the point.
He wasn't sentenced for stealing £5. He was involved in a group of people aiming to take out a huge chunk of money, not just from Camelot but others. The "others" have already been convicted and sentenced for the same crime, regardless of the amount they stole.

Why should a 50 not be able to go for a help desk role? Maybe they don't want to do project mismanagement.
I'd wager a 50, 55 or even 60 year old is more likely to stick with the same company in that role longer than a 16 or 18 year old.
And trust me LinkedIn is no example of hiring. I was offered a director role for a multi billion poubd chemical company. Why? Because I was a director of a 10 person charity.

Nothing new...
Was doing this sort of crap around the year 2000 with some of he first IP cameras around. You dropped in a specific string into Google an bingo, access to hundreds of cameras around the world. Full control over pan and tilt, which meant you could shove a security camera to face a wall.

To me...
...it does seem that Apple have a case. Claiming we only do it for the greater good is flimsy at best. Lifting a product wholesale then selling it on slightly modified is blatant copyright infringement.
Of course the sensible thing would be for the two to come to a licensing agreement, but I can't see that happening.

Spent convictions just mean you don't have to declare them. For many of things you mention, a DBS check is required and will flag them up.
Add to that have having millions of people potentially unemployable is hardly a great solution is it.
The very idea, and a a well proven one, is that people that are able to contribute to society and get self fulfillment are far less to reoffend than those thrown on the scrap heap

If I were to guess....
Apple may throw in the towel, but being a dominant force in the Phone / Tablet market, they can have a huge sway on what gets to be a standard. Amazon sit in the middle, a competitor to Google but also an ally by using Android. The theirs Google, who Apple could conviently make life hard for by not supporting their protocols.
So by joining up, all three get to win and kill off everyone else.
