Before you buy that managed Netgear switch, be aware you may need to create a cloud account to use its full UI

ASUS have done this for years

ASUS home routers require a similar thing. In order to use many features you need to accept T&C's which include transmitting your data to TrendMicro and potentially others. That includes features where it's hard to see why any remote integration is required.

Fortunately they Open Source their router software so you can run builds without the wire-taps.

FAIL

If only there was a way to stop dropping them

Dropping wouldn't be such an issue if flash phones didn't all have shiny backplates. Sure it looks good in the marketing, but why is something designed to go in your hand so slippy?

1plus used to have textured backs and I wish it had become more commonplace.

Bordan Tkachuk

Ah, Bordan Tkachuk, (Lord) Alan Sugars boy and former Viglen CEO made us all curl up in pain when he triumphantly shoved his ignorance at Stuart Baggs (RIP) via national TV.....

"I know what ISP is. It's an Internet Service Protocol. And that's what you're providing. It's not a telecoms operating licence. It's a protocol that allows telecoms over bandwidths. .. "I've been running Alan Sugar's companies for the last 25 years, and that's why I know a little bit about technology."

Even HP Cartridges don't work in HP printers

Even HP Cartridges don't work in HP printers - they're region locked. So if you take your US printer to another global region, you can buy HP cartridges in the shop that are for your printer model and identical to the US ones, but they will not work in your HP printer due to the region lock. Probably even made in the same factory.

The "official" solution is to give a HP representative remote control of a computer in your business/home that is connected to the printer so they can update the firmware manually!

There is a reason I never apply HP recommended updates and will never buy HP again.

The mod firing squad: Stack Exchange embroiled in 'he said, she said, they said' row

Facepalm

How not to apologise

TBF, the issue on Stack Exchange has nothing to do with gender pro-nouns and is all about the owners of a community violating all their own prominent 'be nice' guidelines and recklessly punishing somebody for breaking a new Code of Conduct (to be extra nice) which hadn't even been released yet.

Anyway after El Reg did it's piece - S.E. published a boilerplate apology which went down, well like a boilerplate would really.

Privacy invasion brings some laughs

Years back in a very large engineering firm. The IT dept demonstrated it's snooping power by emailing the entire UK workforce, over 1000 staff with a list of the top 10 most hit websites of the previous day.

6 of the 10 on the list were recruitment websites. To this day I have no idea who on earth thought this could be read as anything other than a clear message that it was time to jump ship. Oddly, another 2 sites in the top 10 were Barbie memorabilia.
