It's true that everything in space can be found on Earth far more cheaply, but that is to overlook the one main difference between them. Stuff in space is IN SPACE. It would costs $$$ to put stuff in space, why not use stuff that is already there.
NASA wants to go to Mars but it takes lots of propellant to get there, it would be very handy if you could refuel in space rather than dragging it all up from Earth.
It’s the ability to launch to any orbit any time which is the real advantage of this system. It might be a bit cheaper but unless the rocket becomes reusable then there won’t me massive savings. Launching from the east cost means you could take use of all the ground processing at the cape, handy.
Explosive icon, would make a good boom.
Maybe in the future it would be possible to replace the 2m of copper with a longer fibre, just change the chippery for suitable alternatives. The connection to the pooter would remain electrical so there wouldn't be any need to change the port.
Also aren't electrical connections more resistant to dirt etc than optical ones.
@TeeCee The ATV based system would probably have the same ballistic fail-safe mode as the Soyuz and there is no room left on the Soyuz rocket to upgrade the Soyuz capsule so the Russian system would likely need a new rocket anyway. All the Euro system needs is the re-entry capsule and to man rate the Ariane 5 with abort sensors and escape system.
This seems like the most realistic option for a domestic Euronaut capability yet all without being beholden to the whims of Putin and Co.

The ATV Evolution study (esamultimedia.esa.int/docs/gsp/completed/C18303ExS.pdf) is a previous look at upgrading the ATV to a crew transfer vehicle as well as other capabilities.
It'd be nice not to a have to rely on the US and Russia now if only the UK would decide to build more than scalded up Big Traks...
