Well ... if a business refuses to just pay a fine of 18 min profit, then it probably *is* a matter of principle. No?
Not saying it's a *good* principle. Just that it's likely not a matter of pure short term money only.
You can't have it both ways - "oh, c'mon, it's 18 min of profit, it's *nothing*, pay up" with one hand, and "you worthless money grubbers who only care about money, that's clearly why you won't pay!" with the other.
Drupalgeddon 1 and 2 *really* sucked.
In addition to the fact that there will always be some first victims, no matter how itchy your upgrade trigger finger ... Drupal does not have any easy one click updating (not that that is always a safe thing to do anyway, but it *guarantees* that updates are non-trivial).
Then there was the sequel ... it's hard enough to get your client to do something - and quickly - about a security exploit, when it's a non-trivial upgrade. But to have to come back just a few weeks later ... "um, yeah, you remember that Drupalgeddon thing a couple weeks ago? Ahem, um, well ... "
Roopee, good point bring up the hoarding of software.
I used some stacks of 15-20 year old software boxes found in the office to build my first standing desk ... the boss then bought me a real standing desk, not seeming to appreciate the aesthetic appeal of my creation ...
Ah, the Iomega ZIP drive ... I remember that, the vast, vast portable storage space! Had one of those for ... well, a very long time after I used it for anything.
I had a no name Taiwanese laptop from the 90s until I think 2012. Could only bear to get rid of it when it wouldn't power up anymore. To get the CDROM in it to even sort of work in Linux (in the 90s), I had to guess at memory addresses and tell a seemingly random CDROM driver to use them. Those were the days ...

In any case, what is new and better here? How is insisting upon different words to describe the *same* controller -> controlled relationship "better"?

Maybe? Who knows what the statistics are.
Thinking it through, it makes it at least more likely that he is either 1. a poor judge of character, or 2. disloyal himself. Both of which seem risk factors ...
And unless you want to renew it yourself every couple of months (or rig up a script yourself to do it), just get a host that integrates it into cPanel and auto-renews it for you.
