Microsoft says tablets will trump PCs in 2013

David Hearn

Not what he said...

"Everything used to be desktops, now 60 per cent of PCs sold are laptops. Next year, tablets will outsell desktops,"

So what he said was that tablets would outsell DESKTOPS, not that tablets would outsell PCs (laptop and desktops combined).

WP Twitter app

If you want an example of how a Twitter app should be done on WP7 (as opposed to Birdsong which the reviewer said was very slow) try out Rowi - fast to resume from background, fast to start, and even very fast support from the developers.

Researchers propose simple fix to thwart e-voting attack

David Hearn

What about Denial of Service attacks?

If the tampering of a single vote could cause all subsequent votes from that machine to be discarded, there is the possibility of effectively wiping out a large number of votes - possibly affecting the overall result.

In some ways it's no worse than paper ballots with seals - damage/remove the seal and the contents must be discarded - but the paper does not discuss any pitfalls of the chained-hash method. That's quite a big omission I feel.

Of course, if it's currently possible to tamper with the results and it's not possible to detect it, then that's a serious problem in itself. Better to know it's been tampered with, than to stick your head in the sand and say "I know some were tampered with, but best keep them all anyway".

Pete Townshend condemns Apple as 'digital vampire'

David Hearn

I found the BBC article on this far more balanced and helpful (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-15528101), some of Pete's comments are below

Quote: "The word 'sharing' surely means giving away something you have earned, or made, or paid for?" he said.

Quote: "Is there really any good reason why, just because iTunes exists in the wild west internet land of Facebook and Twitter, it can't provide some aspect of these services to the artists whose work it bleeds like a digital vampire, like a digital Northern Rock, for its enormous commission?" he asked.

Quote: The guitarist also said that people who downloaded his music without paying for it "may as well come and steal my son's bike while they're at it".

Quote: If someone "pretends that something I have created should be available to them free... I wonder what has gone wrong with human morality and social justice", he said.

Quote: But he also told listeners: "It's tricky to argue for the innate value of copyright from a position of good fortune, as I do. I've done all right."

Quote: And he added: "A creative person would prefer their music to be stolen and enjoyed than ignored. This is the dilemma for every creative soul: he or she would prefer to starve and be heard than to eat well and be ignored."

He seems to realise that he's done okay from his music, and that he realises that people will question his stand considering he's done okay from it - but he does make a point. If you create something, then you should have the right to sell that if you want to (or offer it free, if you want to). "File sharing" costs artists money, with most people who do it, probably not actually paying for their original copy of the music, rather getting it from someone else and then sharing it on. And Apple/iTunes takes a large (30%) cut of the sales, without doing anything to help up-coming artists. He pointed out that John Peel did lots to introduce new artists to listeners.

Microsoft: No Windows 8 ARM support for x86 apps

David Hearn
Boffin

Fairly straightforward?

As I understand it (which could be wrong!) - Windows 8 apps can be standard Windows apps, or Metro apps.

Standard Windows apps (including Windows 7 apps) will run on x86 only.

Metro apps will run on x86 or ARM.

because Apple wants you to...

it's a default signature on the iPhone. I think you can remove it, if you dig in some settings somewhere...

Visual Studio 2010 - chunky but has a great personality

stick with VS2008

The official line I heard when people asked about this was for existing WM6.x and below development, you should use existing tools (ie. VS2008 etc).

For Windows Phone 7 Series, they haven't formally announced what to use - but rumour has it it'll be Silverlight based, using VS2010.

Microsoft lets slip Visual Studio 2008

Thumb Up

It's definitely there

There's 2 ways to download it. The normal way, using the FTM and navigating through the tree-view in the subscriber downloads. Currently only the full Team Suite edition is available that way - they're staggering the availability of the editions using this method.

The other method is to use the 'Top Downloads' section on the MSDN page which includes every edition of Visual Studio 2008, including the MSDN Library and Team Foundation Server etc. This uses the Akamai Download Manager (remember to enable pop-ups!). Bit weird results with IE7 and Vista (check C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Temporary Internet Files\Virtualized\C\Users\<user>\Documents\Download for the actual place it gets downloaded to). Worked better with Firefox on Vista.

I prefer the FTM method as it seems far more reliable, however the Akamai version gives far better and consistent download speeds.

So far, since lunch Monday, I've downloaded VS2008 Team Suite (x3), VS2008 Team Foundation Server, VS2008 Pro, VS2008 Express Editions, and VS2008 MSDN Library. So it's definitely working.

Glad they shipped this month - my free Team Suite subscription runs out on the 31st - hence the manic downloading!

Don't forget Customs duty and VAT on that

So, $280 plus postage to the UK - make that $320. Convert that to £, that's approx £160. Add 2.2% import duty (that's the rate for games consoles), that's now £163.52. Add 17.5% VAT on, now it's up to £192.14. Finally, add £10-£20 customs fee from the courier - and you're over the £200 list price.

So, actually, it's not that much of a difference in costs.

Restored Vulcan takes to the skies

David Hearn
Thumb Up

I remember as a kid...

going to the Warbirds airshow at West Malling (now I housing estate I think). The Vulcan would take off and scream almost straight up into the air. You could not hear a thing, but instead you could feel all your organs in your chest rattling around. As the sound got less and less, you then started to hear all the car alarms wailing which had been set off! Absolutely amazing.

Buckle up. The Developer Highway Code's at the start line

Or from MS direct

Alternatively, you can download it from MS as a PDF. See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/aa473878.aspx

If it's the same as the copies MS were giving away at their free events in 2006, the spine is printed the wrong way, thus when lined up in a bookshelf with other books, it's reversed compared to the other books.

http://blogs.msdn.com/larryosterman/archive/2007/08/28/windows-vista-sound-causes-network-throughput-slowdowns.aspx

"may be an extreme example but I've got 7 adapters on my machine. 2 VPN, a 1394, a LAN, a WLAN and two VMWare. Does this affect the speeds or does the adapters need to be in-use? I guess that 2 (or three if "1394" counts) is standard nowadays?"

Reply: "The VPN and 1394 don't count, but the vmware ones do.

That's a part of the things we need to fix."

So, Firewire adaptors and VPN adaptors won't affect it.
