UK state of the Internet report: Virgin Media 'fast', BT's PlusNet last

Booh

Where are the pedants?

The article says "Virgin’s network is largely based on FTTN (fibre-to-the-node), with last-mile cabling based on Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) wires." but there is no such thing as Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) wires...it's only a copper coaxial cable in the last mile.

It's an HFC network because it uses a combination of fibre and coax in different segments, not some exotic hybrid drop wire!

Re: Ethical?

Thanks for the down-votes, CRUST members... At least I don't have to worry about you pwning me, not because you're ethical, but because you're probably not that good if you need to use cheatware.

Ethical?

When are they rebranding to CRUST then?

Re: Please repaint Darth Vader in different color

...which demonstrates how ingrained our prejudices are from our cultural upbringings:

Pink is for girls, blue is for boys, black is bad and white is good etc.

If you're irritated by this insignificant policy change (that makes no difference to the operation of the NCSC) then you're one of the fortunate ones!

It's an innocuous change that's (probably) not going to make any material difference to you whatsoever, but it does go some way to help bring some relief to other human beings.

If you really do think that this is a big deal, try not to worry so much. That's a first world problem and you may be in need of some introspection to discover why you feel so strongly that this is somehow outrageous.

You just might not understand the problem that this is seeking to address....and that's precisely why it isn't necessarily a bad thing.

This is the protoype, I'd like to see the production model...

And if you aren't aware of this site already, it's a great geeky way to burn some lock-down time. ;)

Wait! What?

Nobody has mentioned emacs yet!

Congrats from 123-Reg! You can now pay us an extra £6 or £12 a year for basically nothing

Problem?

I used 123 some years ago. The most surprising thing about this article was learning that they still have some customers!

Re: Ah, but

I remember my first hard disk experience.

A local emporium had acquired a bunch of 10mb MFM drives and I wanted one badly because swapping 5 1/4" floppies was such a pain.

I saved my pocket money and did odd jobs for months and months. Then, imagine my surprise when fitting it I discovered that my Amstrad 1640 didn't have a controller card and that would be another £450, or about four times the cost of the 'bargain price' hard disk drive itself...

I bawled my bloody eyes out!

Now we are wringing our hands about this development. I remember being told that 200mb was the theoretical maximum for IDE. They'll make this work if it is worth a gain of 1/3rd. They'll make it work well too. Eventually SSDs will be 'the right price' and spinning drives will disappear.

FAIL

So, about an hour before reading this article, our Atari Flashback 3 let forth the magic smoke. I suspect a power supply problem as the electrolytic caps went. I would have been up for a VCS, but this guy's arrogance has spoiled my appetite somewhat!

I guess I own the ROM still, and I remember running MAME on a 486, so I imagine I can quite legally run the 60 titles on a five or ten dollar ARM board, right?
