Fresh programmer's editor on Linux lies Zed ahead

DHR

"At launch it used 73MB of RAM, which isn't much for 2024."

The editor I've been using on UNIX/Linux for 40 years is smaller

$ size /usr/bin/jove

text data bss dec hex filename

199097 23496 304240 526833 809f1 /usr/bin/jove

It used to run on a PDP-11: limited to 64k of code and 64k of data.

Compaq 386 vs Sun 3/60

I bought a Sun 3/60 instead of your Compaq 386. It was just so much better at about the same cost to me.

Of course that only made sense if you wanted to run UNIX.

PC makers just didn't understand high-end workstations at that point.

Das blinkenlights are back thanks to RPi revival of the PDP-11

Re: Brings back memories...

Hmm. Isle of Man, Developed C compilers? That made me think of Manx Software Systems, developers of Aztec C. But it turns out that they were a New Jersey (not even the channel island) company named after the breed of cat.

Odd segue: one of my first programs (in the late 1960s) was to help with breeding Jersey cattle. This links in with the farming and computing theme.
