iPhone: The OS with big aspirations

Control Freakery

I can't run what I like on the computers fridge, furnace, guitar amp, printer, ipod [3rdgen] or engine control system. Other than the guitar amp, I don't really want to. My iPhone can run a whole bunch of apps I can grab for it. Would I like to write my own; yes, and one day when I have time to tinker, I'll sign up for the developer program so I can. No big deal.

Its not like Apple is making you buy their kit; just a lot of whinging over nothing.

Welcome

Lunch

After finishing a plate of kaalikääryleet, Jobs burped, turned to his partner and said, 'I think we should try Japanese tomorrow'. The gentleman from Sweden appeared somewhat relieved, but the Finnish fellow just started at the bottom of his glass.

it takes a harvard prof...

to figure out the obvious? "Control the message" is a slag for "game the media", which is what Apple have finessed, and what the media don't really like. Nobody wants to be a puppet on a string (and good for you el-reg, choosing the high ground on this :), but witnessing how Apple can now get front page coverage for just updating its website, shows who has the upper hand.

sad

Other than AC, nobody else can even bother to post about this. Maybe there should be a run-off of all the dead architectures so we at least can know who really came in last.

Paris; because it really speaks to how pathetic it is.

WTF?

hamster on a wheel

Every media technology has been plagued with this sort of failure. Originally, it was just desktops; which could be re/booted/installed/cycled without too many tears. Some of this dodgy technology is making its way into areas where technology may be expected to actually work; and I don't see it turning out well.

Is there something so intrinsically difficult about drawing pictures that even basic engineering cannot be applied?

Wow!!

Good for Palm; a top notch C-level is the most important element of success. I never understood why companies don't have lots and lots of C-levels, as it would certainly make them more successful.

@AC America is in a downward spiral

Hey George, posting as AC doesn't fool anybody. Sorry you got your ass handed to you by the new boss. The "Under New Management" bit probably stings a bit, but you deserve far worse. Here's hoping you get it.

what application

Oracle, which you mentioned, was running on 64way sparc machines (e10k) almost a decade ago, and yes it scaled based on its workload.

I'm not sure what role a hypervisor would play here, just about any modern OS would use all of those cores; dispatching the single (and multi) threaded apps as required.

Fail and you

Your site has all sorts of rendering glitches when viewed from linux+firefox. I had suspected you didn't care much, but if its 47% of your base, maybe you should put a bit of work into it....

Ransomware Trojan code break 'impractical'

Steve McPolin

trojan horse

Stranger idea. Imagine you need to break a key. Create a virus which overwrites the victims data with your encrypted data and telling them about the extortion.

In sympathy, the really smart guys, provide a mechanism to break it.

You then use the broken key to decrypt all the other data you have....

IPTV/VoD: The tortoise and the hare

Steve McPolin

yeah, but...

I took a spin on the integrate sat + airport + dvd + vhs + radio a few years ago at home. Lasted about 2 months; everything worked, nobody could work it. Never figured out how N devices seems to require somewhere between 2*N and 2^N remotes; none of which are able to effectively use the features of any other device.

The death blow was delivered by a >$200 internet-aware super smart remote. At one point I thought they were inciting revenge on people who bought cheap clones of their mice! We plugged a nice, cheap, Toshiba TV into the sat, and told the kids to watch dvds on the computers....

The key to all this is sadly reminiscent of the PC filled-with-crap disasters - you need a 'head end' computer which singly can control all incoming data (video, sound, net, ...) and directly control the display, speakers, etc... granting the poor l?user what they wanted - to watch the f-ing show; not to remember that Gilligans Island is on "input 77/channel 334". Its not that hard; and its sad that somebody like Apple hasn't stepped up to the plate in any useful way.
