Disenchanted Windows user? Pop open a fresh can of Linux Lite

dizwell

Re: I Wish I Could

I got my other half off Microsoft Money after more than a decade using it by mentioning HomeBank (freely downloadable from homebank.org). Runs on Windows as well as on Linux, incidentally. Very much still developed and not proprietary, though, which is good.

For Lightroom, someone's already mentioned DarkTable, but RawTherapee is also good (and again runs on Windows as well as Linux). Digikam is also very good for image cataloguing, metadata management and so on. Digikam also has raw capability built in, so might be a suitable one-stop shop replacement for Lightroom all on its own.

SpaceX says, sure, Starship blew up but you can forget about the rest of that lawsuit

Read the fine print!!

"Even more strange is SpaceX's statement it "denies that the only way to access Boca Chica Beach is Texas State Highway 4." A brief look at a map of the area makes it pretty clear there's only one road in and out of Boca Chica Beach, and a call to the Cameron County Judge's office confirmed that fact."

But SpaceX's statement didn't say that there was only one road to the beach, did it? According to your fine report, they denied it was the only way to access it. And, indeed, a brief look at a map of the area makes it blindingly obvious that there's a bloody great bit of sea that gives plenty of access to the beach, provided only you are replete with an appropriate dinghy or equivalent maritime conveyance.

For password protection, dump LastPass for open source Bitwarden

dizwell

Former Lastpass subscriber and Bitwarden user here: I won't use the cloud directly for this sort of thing now. KeepassXC for me keeps things local, and whilst I do use Dropbox to share the vault across devices, the use of a manually-transferred key file makes sure that even if you got my vault and could crack my password, you still won't have access to the vault's contents. It's certainly less convenient, I suppose, but I learnt years ago that when it comes to security or convenience, pick one. :)

NASA builds for keeps: Voyager mission still going after 45 years

Re: Spacetime

Bzzt. Incorrect answer.

It was biologist (and physician, poet, essayist) Lewis R. Thomas, not Carl Sagan. When asked what message he would choose to send into outer space in the Voyager spacecraft, he said: “I would send the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach … but that would be boasting.”

Re: WTF?

Pfft. 1688, you say? What about 1485?!

Henry VII was Welsh (which makes him a foreigner as far as England is concerned!) and came with French troops and equipment (ditto). He also had Scots troops, which are especially foreign!

Re: Font recommendations

I always install, and use happily, Century Schoolbook Mono BT. I think I got into doing so after liking Solaris' default console text, though I don't know if it's an exact match. It's close enough for my purposes in Manjaro, though.

I find it exceptionally clear on the difference between 1, i, I, L, l. It's trickier with capital O and 0, though, but not impossible to spot: I'd prefer a dot in the middle of my zeroes, I have to say...

Linux

Working for me...

As one who has been uploading 1TB for the past three weeks on a slightly dodgy Vodafone broadband connection from darkest Nottingham, I have to confess that my uploads have been progressing steadily all morning with no apparent interruption of service at all. Much to my relief!

Then again, I'm running on Linux and using the onedrive utility from github.com/abraunegg/onedrive as my onedrive client. Maybe that makes all the difference?

US Supremes take a look at Microsoft's Irish email slurp battle, and yeah, not a great start

An email address is *not* PII.

If the email address is "bethandtonysterling@gmail.com", does it identify Beth Sterling or Tony Sterling? Or Both? And is it the Tony Sterling living in Manitoba, or the one living in Fife?

PII can get interesting: "The pregnant lady in Arbuckmansworth" is PII if it happens that there is only one person pregant in the town at the time it's written. But an email address in isolation is almost never going to be PII.
