The "grim faced" comment is unnecessary. One, border control, an aspect of law enforcement, is a serious job, it's not handing people a mai tai when they board the plane for Hawaii. Two, bear in mind that the officers are dealing with both entitled arrogant US citizens and clueless visitors who just repeat questions back or cannot answer basic questions without being asked 3x--all this while being criminally understaffed. It takes its toll. Plus, everyone arriving thinks they're a comedian and the first one to say the witty thing they have to say.
