Are you cooler than ex-Apple design guru Sir Jony Ive?

Re: (And yes, *I* know that)

Actually Irish, Adam is English but grew up in Ireland, as did Edge to Welsh parents. Bono and Larry born and raised in Ireland.

Btw. 'Edge' because he was always on the edge of the group of friends growing up.

Amazed she lasted this long

She was cost-cutter in chief, and then got the CEO post.

Amazed she lasted this long with so many losing quarters.

As many as 100,000 IBM staff axed in recent years as Big Blue battles to reinvent itself from IT's 'old fuddy duddy'

Re: No one over 40 is ever seen at a IBM site

Got to remember that Big Blue’s CEO Ginni Rometty got the job since she was previously the Cutter-in-Chief

Re: You get what you pay for...

I worked in Ireland for IBM and there was a lot of staff churn, but it was due to ancient code and conditions. Most stayed the minimum 2 years to get their pension contributions vested and then cleared off before their knowledge became obsolete.

Worst engineering practices and code maintenance I have every come across, technical debt was in the millions, lines of code that is.

It was all very trailing edge, minimum technical effort to stop customers from leaving.

Glad to be done with them.

Liberty Global has speed

If only Liberty could give me the 150 Mbps to the home that I used to get back in Dublin, Ireland (~ 55 Euros/month) , here in the US. Broadband is very deficit and is getting to the point where it almost doesn't qualify as Broadband, unless lucky enough to live somewhere that Google is giving 1Gbps, and some competition.

phones with pico-projectors

I remember reading about pico-projectors in phones back in 2007/8 in the Asian Electronic trade rags, supposed to have shown up by now, must have been a little forestalled by all the Android / iPod battles. So do movies / books / cartoon constitute prior-art, given the idea for this has been around an awful long time.

I remember seeing some patents that had no physical embodiment.

The fisherman

You may see Mr. Bradford in 'Revenge of the Nerds' from his previous Novell existence, catching the trout in his yard stream.

He also long predates Mr Schmidt at Novell, almost to its early days.

What about Os/2

Nobody has mentioned yet the wrong-footed way WP got sent over OS/2, during the Win vs OS/2 in the early 90's which sent WP down the wrong path to begin with, after that they always seemed to be playing catchup in the race to Win95. Also WP were definitely going down the tubes fast when Novell brought them for close to a billion, they should have correctly only paid about $400 million for the company at the time they did buy them. A little Utah valley friends helping Utah valley friends out in that purchase price.

That said Novell should have been wiser in their dealing with M$, given all the back stabbing that had gone on before. I wonder what might have come of it all if Ray Noorda had not been diagnosed with Alzhemers about the same time. It had to have been affecting his decisions.

I always liked WP, much more intuitive to use than Word, and OpenOffice is only coping a lousy word processor too.

What does Microsoft's European defeat mean?

backbone

What it means is that the EU has a backbone unlike the US FTC which blows with who is in power (Bush's slap on the wrist).

Other companies such as Apple are proprietary and arrogant, SUN can be too, as with any other large multi-national, but in general they are not rapacious like MS.

Remember they are a convicted monopolist, and having worked with them and against them, individually MS employees are fine people, as a company you'd want to watch your back, and no matter what the contract said, they would find some peculiar interpretation which would allow them to do whatever they wanted, ask Sendo or Stac, which shows they didn't change much in their practices over a long period of time.

Nixon's young turks

I find it interesting that it is from Nixon's young turks, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc. that we get these illegal surveillance programs. Obliviously, they learned all they know from their original master.
