Like a challenge in a high profile 'face-of-IT' role? Welcome to the Home Office

RGE_Master

Hahahahahahahaha.....

No.

So you locked your backups away for years, huh? Allow me to introduce my colleagues, Brute, Force and Ignorance

RGE_Master

Come again

Let me make sure I understand this, not only did you get the machine back up, using a technique which was frequently employed, the customer then decides that he DOESN'T want the person who sorted it out in the first place?

There is zero logic there, he fixed it, thank him and get him back!

Bank IT bod pocketed nearly $1m in kickbacks from tech contractor bosses for sending deals their way, Feds claim

RGE_Master

What's the number then?

Then $891,000

Could you please pick a number and stick to it?

Re: Why?

I get your point, but regardless his films are entertaining, Gone in 60 seconds, nice cards, pretty women, bad acting. The one where he is a wizard, the sorcerers apprentice, terrible acting but easy to watch.

RGE_Master

Why?

El Reg, why are you bashing Nick Cage? His films are easy to watch and I find your attack on someone who is just trying to entertain us quite sad and unpalatable. Not including the fact he's unlikely to see this (why would he, he's an actor, not an IT professional) and thereby, defend himself against your unjustified words.

That's fast

OK,

I'm 6"5, I've done the math, 6ft5 x 60 is 390, 390 feet per second into miles per hour is 265.9091 MPH.

I could run from London to Edinburgh in less than 2 hours, I could make it from my house to work in 5 minutes rather than an hour on the train.

it's a stupid comparison but helps you to see how fast they really are.

Well if you were 'waiting for this to come up' it's a pity you didn't spend the time devising something more creative.

You can choose not to read, and comment on, articles that don't interest you.

It shouldn't be here either way, nuff said.

RGE_Master

I'm just getting sick and tired of everywhere I go, everything I read is about Brexit. Frankly I couldn't care less about it but when it starts encroaching on my IT sites, I get a little more than pissed.

This is a site for technology, not politics, I was waiting for this to come up.

Former headteacher fined £700 after dumping old pupil data on server at new school

RGE_Master

"Professional Reasons"???? Like what, finding them again and stalking them?

This just reeks of something dodgy, also, why would you copy it up, why not just leave it on the USB stick. I don't quite understand the premise of copying a shedload of personal data up there. Not only that, and yes extreme situation, he lost the stick and some child molester got hold of it.

That fine was poor, the judgement was weak, he should have been given a significantly harsher sentence for that. Hell, someone nicks something from intel and they go to prison, you put hundreds of children at risk and you get fined £700.... Joke, absolute joke.

Dog with 'psychotic tendencies' escapes home to poop on his neighbours' pillows

RGE_Master

That's a shitty situation for those living near that dog, although that being said if it does happen, being nice to the dog does make sense.

I've got a minature Jack Russell at home. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning he's had a little accident and he looks so sheepish, you can't really punish him since it's not his fault, it's not like he thinks "You know what i'm gonna do today, I'm gonna shit on your floor". Also since the dog in the article is a rescue, you don't know the abuse it's had to deal with in it's life, being beaten, being burnt with cigarettes and simply being abandoned by his previous owner, it's traumatic, imagine you being abandoned by your parents, not nice.

He could consider some sort of dog therapy to help him get over it. It does sound stupid but it's been scientifically proven that certain ways to act around a dog and ways to treat it do help it live a better life and get over some of the trauma that's happened to it.

Given his contributions to technology, climate change, disease prevention and cure, this man should be knighted by Her Majesty The Queen of England. Convenient switch hides an inconvenient truth

RGE_Master

Given the fact that this is pretty poor, I think i'll have to tender my own "Who, me?"

I was working for a pharmaceutical company and I had the pleasure of fitting an additional 512GB of memory to a test box. Unfortunately they didn't bother labeling up each server in the enclosure, I was given a map of what server was where. So I promptly shut the box down, pulled it out, fitted the memory and then booted it back up.

Zero issues, up until the following morning. I didn't bother using the UID on the machine to make sure it was right. Turns out I pulled the incorrect server, caused some application testing to fail and then fitted an astronmical amount of memory to it. The upside was the testing completed in a few hours with the extra memory instead of 24 hours, once that had finished, I shut it back down, shut the correct server down and moved everything.

Another one

I was cabling up an enclosure via fabric over to our san, Low and behold they never bothered to cut the cabling so by the time it got to the san, there was a massive pile of fiber, literally huge. So I started my work and traced the correct cable and plugged it in, all was fine, until I lost my footing on the flood and promptly put my foot into the pile of cabling. we lost 7 cables out of the hundreds that were there. So we had to re-cable them again.

Google Chrome 69 gives worldwide web a stay of execution in URL box

RGE_Master

Well done!

"Earlier this week, Google Chrome security product manager Emily Schechter said that Google, in response to community feedback, has decided to roll back Chrome 69's habit of hiding the subdomains "www" and "m" in URLs displayed in the browser's omnibox, via an update to Chrome 69 for Desktop and Android."

Well done, now deal with Chrome chowing through memory like Homer Simpson at an all you can eat shrimp restaurant and we're good!

I'm pleased that Google have actually listened to the feedback and rolled back. That was a horrible plan, horribly executed and frankly a dumb idea.

A boss pinching pennies may have cost his firm many, many pounds

RGE_Master

This is a perfect example of "You get what you pay for"

In all honesty, you should have made it perfectly clear to TPTB that this is a fully unsupported scenario and that they are removing any and all redundancy for the sake of a few quid. Essentially it was your job to really push them to do it properly, point out the risks and when the shit hits the fan, and it will, you can take the email your penny pinching cretin of a boss sent you abstaining you from any and all responsibilities for when it went down, to his boss, get him fired, get his job, get a pay rise and then do it how it's meant to be done....

Official: Google Chrome 69 kills off the World Wide Web (in URLs)

RGE_Master

Google,

You've done a lot of silly things, but this is by far the dumbest thing you've ever done, from a security perspective, this is a massive issue, from a user experience perspective, this is a massive issue. Not a single person I've spoken to about this thinks it's a good idea. You take it upon yourself to "Improve" our experience of your RAM hogging, buggy web browser and you actually managed to make it even worse. You stopped supporting Java and now use your own crappy embedded one and now this.

Sort out your memory issues before you try to bring in "Features"
