Once I did try keeping all of that gear on a UPS, because the power supply here was rather flaky at the time. But I made the mistake of buying a "eco smart" device, that decided all by itself if the power consumption was below some arbitrary threshold that could not be adjusted after the device left the factory then it should switch itself off! Of course you will realise by now that the total demand of modem/router, POE box and SIP phones was insufficient to keep the UPS turned on! Where did I leave that drawing board?

The nasties were from the Soviet era, made in Uzbeckistan, and unguarded for a few years before the Yanks were invitied in to help look after them. It could have been any one of all manner of criminals who dunnit.

In an ideal world, that would be so. But like so many ID checks introduced by HMG, the checker has to be able to prove that they have undertaken the check by producing on demand a copy of the checked document to the appropriate Government Inspector or to Mr Plod himself. So let us reword it for HMG reality to read:

"Ideally they would then verify the ID data and then ensure local copies of it are retained indefinitely"

For many a year ...

For many a year I have been told by retailers that they do not trust my cheques. To which the swift retort is that I don't trust their card machines. Yet another to add to the list of reasons why!

At present we eventually compromise on cash, but be aware they are working hard through organisations such as "The Payments Council" (made up of banks and big retailers alone) to marginalise cash in just the same way as they marginalised cheques.
