This story just reminds me of the amount of time we had to spend in memmaker in DOS tweaking physical and virtual memory for different applications. Also remember manually tweaking config files when the setup utilities for DOS games never set the right sound card or you needed to play about with it until it worked properly.
Those were both simpler and much more complicated times.
I can't remember the last time that someone actually went through and posed very difficult questions like this. All too often we skirt around these issues and talk about security and networking technologies as products which everyone must have because there is no other way around it.

Interestingly I think I might be able to add something around this. I was looking at Tech Field Day on YouTube and found an interesting article around the Open19 Project. Apparently LinkedIn have been using something similar for some time now and now that Microsoft have acquired them I would assume they would go down this path rather than buying into something completely white box. That and the fact that things like OCP and Microsoft's own node designs have been in research for some time now I don't know why you would go ahead and buy something standard from a major vendor.
