Yeah it's cheaper
Those MicroSDHC Readers must be the thing that makes up the difference in price.
'Cause the Nexus 4 still hasn't got One.
WHY?!

But, if your smart enough to actually get on the Web, then you're also smart enough to take the time to learn about the Alternative Browsers, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari (for Windows). I for One can not recall ever having been ever greeted by a Browser Choice Screen ever.
Order of the Day in a fresh install is to get the Network up. Hop onto the Net, d/l Firefox install that, and get the rest of the latest Drivers. (e.g. nVidia, Realtek and Printer). The only time I have to fire up IE is on your second given Tuesday of any given Month to update the latest fixes to Microsofts Inection Exploiter.
So a better question to ask might be, why are we still forced to use IE to update our Machines?
When you put it like this, it saddens me greatly that this boom time of innovation came to an end nearly 40 Years ago now. Weren't we not meant to be colonizing Mars and live in floating houses (i.e. The Jetsons). And what about our flying Cars? If the Internet is the best thing to come out of our Epoch. Then may we be forgiven.
All you need to do to Root a Galaxy Phone is throw a Three Finger Salute at it.
(e.g. Volume Rocker down, Home Button and Power at the same time).
Install newest Odin Software, and then a matching rooted Firmware to what you're currently running.
Easy-Peasy.
Really if you can't bother to spend a few minutes over on XDA-Devlopers and learn up on how to properly mod your Phone, then you deserve to get attacked....
So at the risk of sounding stupid, I have always wondered about this:
Can a visible object Star, Galaxy, Cluster et-al. say for example our Galaxy here, be visible at its calculated 13.3 Billion Light Years and again some where beyond that point.
No perhaps not here on Earth per-say, but if I were somewhere between here and this Galaxy could that even be possible?
If the fought for the things I believed in, for example the repeal of TV / Internet Licensing.
If old Folks want to watch the Crap that's on ARD / ZDF all the time ~Let them pay for it!~
Let us not get in to the so-called 3'erd Channels. Nothing could save that sorry crap. Yet I'm still charged to a tune of 300.00€ a year for this so-called privilege. And I don't watch a jot of it. I'm to busy watching Freesat.
From Germany. and oddly enough also a Pirate Party Member.
Windows as it is is a dead end, The only thing that keeps it relevant is the over dependance on Office which they are also killing off with the Ribbon interface. A thing Sooo horrendous that I'm still using Office 2003.
Gaming on the PC is tiresome. You play One crappy FPS, and you've played them all MMORPG that cost 60€ + an additional 10€ a Month to Play. Your joking right?
And then Microsoft are busting out this Tablet OS, and is trying to pass this off as the next-gen OS refresh?
This can not end well.
Then again, my Smartphone has warmed me onto Tablets more so then the Tablets ever did, and if Tablets really are the future then this is all really moot to start with.
But, in my opinion the day of the big beige box is over.
The more I use it, the more I like Linux but, how the hell would Valve publish for every Linux Distro under the sun is beyond me.
>but an equally good tribute is to spend the day watching satellite TV and remembering that Telstar made it possible.
Couldn't agree more, and I'm thankful every day to have access to Ch4 Ch.5, BBC 1-4 et-al, iTV- 1-4, Ch etc... etc... and, some of those also in HD. Given that I live in Germany I'd be outta luck with out the Astra 2A/B/D/N, and Eutelsat 28A (a.k.a Eurobird 1), Networks up there!
Windows 8 (no matter how ugly and useless it is), will only cost ~ca $40.00(USD), when it releases?
Me thinks you might have missed a "2" that came just before those other Numbers.
Or did Microsoft suddenly realize the best way to kill off Piracy was not to lock down our PCs (not like that's gonna stop 'em anyway), but to offer there Warez for a reasonable price for Once.
Or does this $40.00(USD), just get you the Basic "N" Version?
That'll let me print off a few Reports every few Months, with out having to deal with dried-out Cartridges, Clogged Nozzles. Causing me a great deal of lose of Paper, Ink and MORE OVER Time, in fighting with it to actually get the fecking Job done?
Ahhh yeah that's right Laser Printing, in such instances then Color Laser.
As for Imaging, there are much better options out there like the Thermal Pixma Printers from Canon?
IMHO Ink-Jet is just an unending Money Pit. Thus the above Question, I'd welcome such a Printer.
Fail for the reasons stated above...
User friendliness is quite the relative term here, it a different OS just like OSX and anything else you could think of. The big headache is that there are no Apps worth using on Linux.
i.e. No:
Photoshop
Acrobat
Illustrator
(Insert further Adobe Products HERE)
And worst of all NO OFFICE, now I'm sorry but, yeah there's Gimp and I do believe that Acro-Reader may be available on Linux but not full Acrobat as I'm aware of. and let us not get started on Open Office / Libre Office what ever it's called these days. If my time spent searching for a useable Office alternative on Linux and or Android has taught me anything. THERE ISN'T ANY. At the least not when your forced to work in (or on), Office Formatted Forms like I have to.
And where are the Games? Wine might be nice till you get the boot from Diablo 3 for running inside of it.
Linux as an Embeded System on HTPC's and Phones however are where it's at.
Hopefully if we ever see the fabeled Ubuntu Phone thing might slowly change in these things.
Kill Windows 8, and by that Train of thought kill that *#@&'ing Ribbon as well.
In short quit screwing 'round with crappy touchy-feelly UI that nobody ever asked for and leave us to our Keyboards and Mice. Thank you very much.
It might also be added that M$ implantation of the HTPC has also failed miserably as well. What with no support for DVB-C and or the Common Interface Decryption systems in their OS. I think it only took'em to Widows 7 to get to DVB-S2 and I forget if CI was implemented there or not.
I have since given up trying and have gone Linux and have been in HTPC bliss ever since with VDR & XBMC.
Games on the PC are a joke and IMHO are losing credibility on this Platform faster the what's implied here.
The only thing that still keeps me tied to them is Office.
And woe betide them if everyone ever starts to get tired of that then it really will be Game Over for M$.
As it is the only thing I hate more the Metro UI is Apple, so I'll just have to stick with Tux.
Vista may not have been perfect, but after having actually used it for a while, till after Win7 came out.
I have to say that Vista was hardly as bad as some of you made it out to be. There were several things in Vista (e.g. Ultimate Edition) , that make Windows 7 seem... Well bassackwords. Like the Live Wallpapers for example. I think the thing that made me jump on the Vista Hate Wagon, at the time was that the changes to the Start Menu were just to much to take at the time, till I just basically let it be and learned to live with it. Windows 7 is hardly revolutionary from this perspective.
But, a Touchscreen / Phone UI has lost NOTHING on a Desktop / Notebook / Laptop / Netbook et-al...
This time (unlike then with Vista), these opinions are more justified.
Microsoft has already caused me to move my HTPC to Linux;
1) Cause they do not support DVB-C (For Cable)
2) Their Software in a word sucks as a HTPC - TV STB System.
So I already have a few good years of having set up Linux-VDR under several distributions from Mandrake to Gentoo, as well as Redhat and of course Ubuntu. Given that I game on a Xbox or PS3. Abut the only thing that keeps me on this crappy platform is of course M$ Office.
And that's cause... Well no matter how good (Insert name here: ) Office is it is still not M$ Office and sadly is incompatible 99.990% most of the time.
Don't know if it's related, but I can't login from my Smartphone App. even though I could successfully login from the Browser (on said Smartphone).
Makes me wonder if the rumors of imminent shutdown are more true then we are led to believe.
Although it's kinda cool to have the ability to stay in contact with those from a by-gone era.
But, there is no money to be made here, save for the Facebook type Games, which I could care less for.
And when you have Govenments (like yours i.e. Last years Riots), expressing such desires to curb or indeed to pull the reigns on Social Media. You'd have to be totally slightly less bonkers to dump your Money in Spain or Greece, then in Facebook Stock.
And why is it that I find this to be utterly and completely pretentious, and indeed perhaps the single BIGGEST Eyesore yet devised by a Committee of complete dolts ever foisted on the masses of the general public at large?
Microsoft are ohh so oft accused of nicking "iDeas" from Apple, what a shame they couldn't be arsed this time 'round to actually create something more sensible then the Metro Interface.
Me thinks that perhaps that since I'm already skilled enough to use Linux on a daily basis (i.e. Command Line Linux not GUI!), that I might actually have to consider making it an OS option come the next 'round of Hardware Updates.
There just is no way I'm ready to give up the age old Start Button for a touchy-feelly Metro thing-a-ma-jig. that's as completely as ugly on a +24" LED Monitor as it is on a 3.5" Phone.
Tablets can only become affective only after they ditch the On-Screen Keyboard for a Handwriting Input Method. Strangely enough, Apple had the right idea with the Newton. But it was about Twenty Years ahead of it's time though.
But for Tablets to be of any use, they first need to become as easy to use as a blank Sheet of Paper. Only this would actually be enough to pique my interest in Tablets though.
Dumb Fondleslabs with a biased fixation to access the Web and their associated App Stores will never catch on in the same way. even if everyone seems to think that this is the way that its going.
But, nothing AND I MEAN NOTHING is more annoying then having to sacrifice over 2/3'erds of the Screen over to the On-Screen Keyboard.
Basically Fondleslabs leave me kinda mehh.....
Surly Samsung would tote their TouchWiz (5?) interface, and not the standard AOSP One.
As for ditching the physical Home Button for a YASB One, yeah I could see them doing that, if only to get the Crapple Lawyerbois to stand the flip down.
Other then that, why does it have to be in White?
I used to think that was cool, and it was ON THE iPod (Pre Phone!), now it just nasty, and Black is so much cooler.
Always has been, and will undoubtedly will remain so. I see no reason why, or even how this will change. (For the Desktop)...
But, lets look at integrated Devices, i.e. Set-Top Boxes (Cable & Satellite), Phones and Tablets as well as Data Storage Systems. Linux has always thrived well here. And none of these Applications would require a "Desktop" of sorts.
I have used various Linux Distros, Redhat, SuSe, Mandrake, Gentoo, Debian and Ubuntu to name a few.
The thing I always hated about Linux is that Once you spend enough time figuring out how to do things on on CLI you'd have to then relearn those incarnations for another System.
As a huge Fanboi of Klaus Schmidinger's VDR Project (http://linuxtv.org/vdrwiki/index.php/Main_Page), One of the major highlights of my life is when I need to either update to a newer (or change over to a different) Distro, and find that I then need to reconfigure that Distros' version of LIRC to work with my Remote. Or in the case that most of the newer Distros are finally moving to Ubuntu as a base. Find that LIRC has been superseded by something even more assinine, and compleatly fails to do it's job. Even as the Distro makes chime in as to how this would make Most Remotes work OoTB. Imagine my surprise when ~90% of the Buttons actually Worked, save the Blue, Menu, Exit and Info Buttons then DO NOT WORK!
But, then I'm still loathing the withdraw of the 60W Incandescent Light Bulbs as well
plus ça change I guess....
But Linux on the Desktop? Naghh it's never gonna happen, and unlike my Desktop loving friends here, I can't wait to see the back of 'em. What I wouldn't give to find a decent MoBo that actually still had a full complement (i.e. FIVE) 32-Bit PCI Slots on it. Good Luck tracking One of those down. Gaming belongs on the Consoles, and productivity can be done on a Notebok / Netbook or even Tablets or Phones. (although I'd like to see these Two pick up where Crapple left the Newton for this endevor though). The Desktop may very well still have a lot of life left in it, for those chores that Mobile Devices either can not or will not handle. But these are on the whole very limited in scope and those who'd cry the most about 'em will not still this tide.
The Desktop as we know it is dieing out, I wouldn't even it give it Ten Years time. before it falls off the map, and Windows 8 with it's touchy - Feelly Interface is a good a harbinger of this as any.
Pirate Flag Cause One of the great things about it (VDR), is You don't need a Skybox to record things, and as Linux is otherwise unrestricted you can actually record what you want when you want, and not what Sky (or others I'm thinking of HD+ here), would tell you, you could.
I always wondered about the CPRM crap that was supposed to be in (or on), all those current Gen Mem-Cards. S(ecure)D(igital), S0NYs' M(emory)S(tick), Just to name a few.
How do these DRM features work again?
In the case of the latter I was able to copy my "legally" owned copies (PSP), to my 4Gb Sandisk MemoryStick, Doing this had it's advantages
1) No need to carry 'round multiple UMDs'
2) Shorter loading times
3) Slightly less drain on the Battery as the UMD wasn't constantly running.
I'd have thought that those nasty DRM buggers were there to prevent that kind of thing?
S0NY have thankfully managed to work out a system whereby this can't (yet), and cheaply be done. Their answer? None standard Formats.
So just how long till we see a Playstation Vita to SD Converter for the PC?
Or some hacker Card Reader that will address the Card direct?
Personally I doubt we'll see any 3'erd Party Cards come out for it, but for now it seems that S0NY are somewhat safe, for now...
But, dear Register, do pray tell us about what happened to all the Fabled DRM measures ON TODAYS CARDS that only seem to do all of jack all?
I can't be the only reader here that's interested to read about this?
I feel for you. I too would like to know why we need to reinvent the Wheel, and kill off the Incandescent (i.e. Tungsten), Bulbs?
If the Windmill crazy Tree-hugging dolts with their GeeWizzs' want something ~less polluting~ and, are stupid enough to pay over the odds for their next iDevice (read Lightbulb), then I say more power to 'em, BUT PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE!
But I guess it's too late to save the good 'ol 60W'er now that that it got banned throughout the E.U.
Dammed shame I failed to stock up on 'em before hand...
when will we see Flash (NAND Flash), Storage at a level to match the capacities of bog-standard HDD's? I mean what's so great about NAND Flash HDD's with piddly amounts of capacity. I mean what are the up to these Days 320Gib? With a Price Tag that has like a 1 with 3 "0's" at the end of it. When you average run of the mill Magneto HDD has something approaching 3Tib and only costs round say €70.00(EUR), or so?
I mean really how can NAND Flash hope to survive this kind of disadvantage?
Surly not everyone has a very large IT Expense Account to though at these things much less find any justification for doing so?
So when do these nut jobs want us to ditch our beloved Patters for this Junk again?
as I can use the - (Minus Sign), to weed out the garbage results I'm more or less ok with this.
personally though I'm with the neigh sayers on this One though.
Why replace an otherwise decently working standard, and replace it for something that expends more energy requiring that I use an additional keystroke, where as before I didn't have to.
As for Google+ I think Google are underestimating their Users, after all Google pretty much is the web (or at least the search provider of choice).
Shame that Altavista, Yahoo, and Co. seemed to have fallen by the wayside though.
I wonder if anyone could out Google in the Search Biz, now that Google have seemed to move onto selling Ads, and Social Media services.
Solid-state HDD Manufactures (ODMs and or OEMs), plain to make their Gear more attractive to the Man on the Street? I mean a 3TB HDD (i.e. Platter Drive), for ca~ 150- € seems to me a more attractive proposition then say a 40GB ~ 60GB SSHD that cost 2x to 4x as much?
And here I thought the Future was in Flash.
Well not at this rate, and I for One welcome our bargain Basement 3TB 2.5" HDDs
only affect S0NY published Games, (like say Resistance 3, or in this case Uncharted 3 etc...), or indeed ALL FORTHCOMING TITLES FROM SCEx (J,A,E), including any and all Shovelware?
This could be the final Nail for me, PC Gaming is a FREAKING JOKE!, I can not properly spew my utter detest towards the entire FPS genre. Tiresome, boring, unimaginative, and just about everythings been done a million times over.
Whats left Racing Sims? That's fine I guess, but what to do when I want to play something from NIS (e.g. JRPGs) , supposing I wanted to try something more "Casual" what are my choices in the J'n'R Shpere on the PC? My Magic 8-Ball says no.....
So hopefully all this will do is to drive the Retailers to force quicker Price reductions, Cause there IS NO WAY IN HELL I'M PAYING 60€+ for the king of crap that's in my current line-up.
The only exception to that rule would have been Gran Turismo 5, A Game that convinced me to get a PS3, and a very expensive Wheel. I still need the even MORE EXPENSIVE Playseat though.
So that'll be down to the statuesque then.
I flippn hate Crapple as much as the next Android / Samsung loving fanboi that I'am.
But, really come on this is what you use choose to fire your first volley at?
If all those Fashiontards haven't managed to figure this much out for themselves yet that Crapple only OFFICIALLY sell disposables.
Then what hope is there left for this World?
What what about reason Number 11?
Crapple HATES Adobe?
I see to recall a story, not to long ago in fact, http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/07/wp7_update_hack/
Where Microsoft nuked their users who dared to put a Tow over the line,
While I can appreciate the sentiment of being first, +3,000(insert Currency of choice HERE).
Seems to me nothing more the having to much Money and not enough Cents...
Wow I remember the last time they made this free, like Promotor Fidei I to live in Germany, and hate all the censorship. But, was not aware that a low violence version would be needed, seeing that the Player is supposed to be an Android. An albeitly non-green chocolate factory version though...
MeeGo, or are Nokia under some NDA from Balmer to "forget about it"?
Seems to me that with MeeGo you have everything One could want from Android (e.g. Linux and FOSS), with out all that messy IP issues.
Personally I hope that the EU Courts tell Apple to get stuffed,
I know it's not likely to happen though.
