Official: Microsoft's 'Get Windows 10' nagware to vanish from PCs in July

Re: Dilemna

Linux Anarchy? Oh wow... Not counting stuff like Arch, or Gentoo, neither of which seem to conform to any known standard that I know of, there's what? Those Linuxes that fall behind Readhat (yum), and or those that fall behind Debian (apt-get).

So which side did MicroSoft fall into bed with? Assuming it was say Redhat, as I suspect it was. How is this gonna make me a Debian user, any happier, when I have to go and re-relearn all the differences Redhat have nurtured. At the cost of my built-up Debian knowledge.

I kinda get what your getting at, but I still think your missing the point.

But, if it means that I could continue to type in 'ls' instead of the longer 'dir' (What can I say I'ma lazy bastard!), then I'm all for this improvement.

So whos the 'Victim' here then? Us who have deprived MicroSoft of any meaningful revenue stream, be it via WaaS, Adware click bait etc.... Since moving on the greener pastures of Mint, or them?

Re: Why July

Or you can stay on Win 10, with reduced performance via the OS but parity with graphics API as MS will undoubtfully adopt Vulkan ASAP aswell to try keep up with a higher performing Linux system on an equal hardware platform....

Will that even jive, with MicroSoft's big notion of getting the 'Big Boys' onto its (Cr)App Store needed to run at native speeds as one might expect from todays pov. Or the Universal Windows Platform as they'll call it, which is just another form of Digital Tax/DRM that'll be required to play said "Games" on Windows 10 or newer.

Or have we already forgotten that?

Surly those Visigoths on Android using of all things GMail, to check their Hotmail.com Posts, must surly be depriving MicroSoft of all those wonderful Eyeballs with which to see all those (In their world), wonderful Ads....

Michael Habel

It came from Outlook Express...

So this would have been a Windows (h)8 exclusive then? No wonder this pass right by me... It must have been what late 2000, and Windows98SE since I had last used Outlook Express. If I recall correctly MicroSoft done chucked out the old Outlook Express with Windows XP, or was it 7? All I can seem to recall was it not being there on latter OS's, so I never used it.

Oddly enough, looking back I did actually enjoy using it on Win98SE, and had found it to have been better (for me...), then the full fat Office98 version. Which felt well fat. Perhaps I was just younger, and hadn't caught on to this whole Calendar thing. Which so warp's my world now. Still as they say you can't take it (i.e. The PC), with you. An Android Phablet on the other hand. So...

Michael Habel

Where did this Live 2012 come from? To be honest this would be the first time I ever heard of it. This wouldn't be why MicroSoft are packing it in perhaps? Nagaa the Spamware argument seems much more likely.

Getty on Google: It’s all about traffic, duh

Michael Habel

Re I don't get it?

It seems to me that it's a case of Company "A" repudiatedly taking away Ad facing Traffic from Company "B", and complaining that someone else made off with their virtual Dime.the ballache seems to me that for Company "B" needs Company "A" to exist, to be even seen. But don't over care much about the fact that nobody that matters even care that Company "A" even exists.

If Company "A" feels hard done by Company "B" generic and broad as the universe is wide Image Search. Then the answer to me seems to be obvious. Create a new competing web image search site, and give users a more compelling reason to use it over, it's arguably inferior competitors.

Then you'll have the kind of traffic that these clowns are balling about.

But fork that noise! Blame Google instead.

Michael Habel

Why don't they just make an Android App that takes the user directly to their Site? Barring that, some cleverly named Website, that will give them the traffic they so desperately want, so badly? I can see how the Google hate patrol would be the ones to find fault here. But, before Advertising came along. This was Google's raison d'etre, to make searching for this kinda stuff on-line much simpler, and faster?

So by that proxy, does Getty have any care about other 'Providers' (Bing. Yahoo (Well whats left of it) etc..?), or is it singularly Google that they just hate? But, decrying over how the Web has worked in essence since day one isn't going to change their favors I think. What they needed to do, and must do is to take a more proactive stance on their properties.

After all the Author did claim that their "Search" was better then Google's... Personally I wouldn't really know. Why, cause While I may have heard about Getty Images... The fact that even have such an engine to search their warez was lost on me... The further fact that its probably also closed to the further public. (Why buy what you can just look at / use from whatever Google turns up), is probably also why nobody but, them even care.

Google might be a bit naughty... Hell even downright evil is some books. But, they never pretended to be someone else's charity. If Getty can't fix their own problems by whatever means (e.g. Robots.txt), then its their own lookout.

Re: Consumer Watchdog...

First of all Cyanogen can not install GAPPs do to such copyrights that currently exist. Any fool that has the most basic grasp of what CyanogenMod is would already know that. As to becoming a ~failed~ OEM wanting to flog MediaTek Devices via the backdoor to add other el-cheapo Chinaphones into the mix. Just never seemed to pan out for 'em. Would have had to also agree to such contract terms with Google as say any other OEM (e.g. Samsung, HTC, Motorola etc...)

Kinda sucks for them, But, again its a problem simply solved by marching over to Google, and slaming "OpenGapps" into the Search Bar. As the Meerkat say SIMPLES!

Re: "Freezing out third-party apps"

@Triggerfish

I don't have a problem with Google wanting to have control over its own App Store. Let us not pretend that Google is doing this for our benefit. Of course it's a personal Highway for them to push Ads at us. So it's a perfectly reasonable approach for them to want to block stuff like that.

Of course it's my right to tap the Switch that allows me to sideload AdAway from FSecure's App Store. If that's really atmthe end of the day what this is about. Then where's the outrage for Cupertino then? Surly that lot are far more guiltier of such a practice then the Mountain View Chocolate Factory.

I suspect this has more to do with Amazon though, in that Google blocked their crappy Jump though the hoops App. That you had to download from the PlayStore. To eventually get to the App you wanted in my case that would have been Prime Movies.

Michael Habel

Re: "Freezing out third-party apps"

and 3rd party maps, search, browser, mail, etc.

If a manufacturer takes Android with Google Store (as opposed to AOSP), you need to install the Google apps and you aren't allowed to bundle competing apps with the phone.

So just host them on your very own App Store, like the BIG BOYs do, and put up big fat Ads at the top to cox people to try it. Assuming its any good... Doubtful. Then I'm sure word would get 'round. Besides where exactly are these fabled Third Party Apps anyway? I don't recall ever having so much as ever having seen a YouTube review, or an XDA Article about how to go GAPP-less.

I can only hitherto suspect that there's likely as not a reason for this.

Michael Habel

Re: Consumer Watchdog...

Frankly, I don't care who says it. It needs to be said.

Ok so how do you fix it then? I gather we already have Tizen, MIUI, and Amazon's FireOS as Android Alternatives. Prety much any (and I dare say every), Custom ROM that, you'd care to mention, ships without any GAPPs at all. Almost as pure an ASOP experience as you could get.

Is this about the lack of love for Samsung, and Co's own App Stores? Perhaps if they'd to get on with PayPal, as a payment method that would work out for them more. But, yeah kinda pointless when you already have a Google Account for the PlayStore.

Everybody has a problem, but when pressed to it very little substance of how to address the aforementioned problems.

1: Bundling of Search... If I wanted to use bing (Zarquon forbid!), I'd have gone off, and gotten myself a Windows Phone. I would add something here to the note of iOS... But, Apple don't do search. And Chome has no less then Four other Providers for your searching pleasure.

Yahoo

AOL

All at the reach of a Fingertip from those Three Dots, at the upper right hand corner. Perhaps they should be faulted for not advertising this?

2. GAPPs a.k.a The other White elephant in the room. Why is it so hard to figure out that Android is otherwise Open Source, and YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO USE GAPPs... If you do not wish to? And, in point of fact must be manually installed post installation of any Custom ROM *cough* CyanogenMod *cough*, do to leagle copyright constraints. I dare say it isn't Google's fault that most people want GAPPs on their Devices. As its GAPPs that People want, and not necessarily Android itself.

3. The App Store(s).... Of all the Samsung Devices I've ever had over the years, these largely also came with their own Samsung App Store. In fact infamously so... Go read some of the reviews for Samsung Push Service. Which pretty much lives for its App Store. Ok that maybe one thing, since the OEMs can rest some control (for now), on what actually lands on the Device. (i.e. Bloatware, that can never just be simply uninstalled simply.) But, where the heck does Amazon, and Co. get off balling that Google won't let them flog, their competing 'App Stores' from with-in Google's own Playstore? I don't get this one. Not one bit. I don't walk into a Lidl, and think I'm shopping at Aldi, much less Tesco's. This is pure over reach by a mile.

Re: I think the origin of Christianity is rather well-known

You mean 'Cause Christianity has a defacto Emperor with a very large Hat (mind you!), that this somehow must deminish all other (pseudo)religions? Hell there was a time when I prayed to the Valar, (e.g. J.R.R. Tolkien), before 'common sence' smacked me in the face and clued me onto what a sham all religions are. In fact looking back at it, it's just one more reason why I really do believe that he never got the credit he deserved as one of the great English Author's during his lifetime.

But, how you could't read the Silmarillion as anything but, the new Testament (set within Middle Earth), is actually lost on me. How Microsoft copied malware techniques to make Get Windows 10 the world's PC pest

Michael Habel

Sadly it may still be a while before we're finally rid of this virus, once, and for all. But this is merely just one of the many straw's that have broken that Camels back. But, of I had to cite my single biggest concern it would be down to the question of trust. Not that MicroSoft were ever that big on trust to begin with. These, and their chief clown actually believe that it's ok for the Government to snoop on us....

Which was perhaps one thing, but now they want a look in as well in order to flog some more tat from what used to be Eidos. Then that's the universal sign to GTFO. With, what on the surface would appear to be a two teired approach to Windows Programs (i.e. Games), running in some new, and improved (e.g. a DRM'egd enforced), native mode, or a watterd (i.e. dummmed down) slowed down mode...

Well even if the Mustardrace would gleefully lap it up. It seems that some of the bigger boys (Tim Sweeney), however might hopefully have better ideas. But, MicroSoft shall not be darkening my PC ever again.

Microsoft cracks open Visual Studio to Linux C++ coders

Michael Habel

Taking the pragmatic approach

Isn't this a bit well late? We go it. Gates, and Ballmer weren't so hot on Linux and wnated to avoid it like the FOSS plague. Now at the end of the Windows age. It's like they've seen the errors of their was? Or is this just as it appears merely the murmerings of some silly old codger yelling 'And another thing!'.

I would Franky ask the base question why now? And why that product? Assuming for the moment my target was some *nice. Would it not be cheaper to just use the standard set of tools there. It's this kind of stigmatism that's keeping Linux, and BSD back As everyone thinks it has to be MicroSoft in oder for it to be relevant.

XPC Windows on a PPC huh... I thought that was more mid-to-late '00's. With Microsoft's other Console the Failbox 360. Since the original XBOX, had a 733Mhz (Pentium III era), Intel Celeron CPU. So not a Power PC Chip then.

Michael Habel

I think Mr. Orlowski may have overlooked the more nutter parts of said mud.

At the risk of calling him an outright shrill, why hasn't Mr. Orlowski not bothered to address some of the larger White Elephant's in the room?

Such as trust? Why should we trust that MicroSoft has 'our' best interests at heart when they're essentially ramming Windows 10 down everyone's throat? What about the fact that it's no open secret that Windows 10 raison d'être is to spy on its users, and report back to Redmond so as to better target ad's at said Group?

Furthermore why has Mr. Orlowski failed to mention that the majority of End-Users will no longer have any kind of control over their 'System(s)' since such Updates that fall, (And indeed HAVE FALLEN!) can and, will brick such Systems. The best part about this is the fact that MicroSoft have since stopped publishing any kind of useful KB Articles (Implying that they were ever useful to start with... But, I digress.); And would now go as far to infect such 'Critical' Updates with even more nefarious Malware behind our backs?

Mr. Olowski has failed to address the question of trust. I mean so what if MicroSoft had to recant a bit on the Windows GUI to replacate those die-hard 2k~W7 users. Sure it's nice to see the conced on such things, now and again. But, the man left a huge gaping hole with which you could drive a lorry through.

And, it's of my opinion, that this is why Windows 10 is and will continue to be such a failure. The bigger question going on from here is how can the big M regain such trust as it has, lost... Is loosing to Windows 10?

If these concerns were only applicable to just Windows 10 only. I'd say that would be one thing. But, everything I have brought up here also effects Windows 7 as well. Perhaps, and to a degree we can still afford to play the game of whack the spyware mole on those systems. But, with the way things are going.

1. Who has time for all that? And.

2. How can we continue trusting a corporation that's actively embedding hidden Malware into as many Updates as it possibly can? Sure it's just the anoying GWX today... But, what of tomorrow?
