Gnome pops up a little app-launcher list and a search bar when you press the win-key, the focus is put to the search bar so you can just start typing to search.

Re: Vertical taskbar in Win11

I prefer the simplicity of XFCE :)

Re: Vertical taskbar in Win11

No you can't, and that's the issue - I use 3 screens in landscape position and have a single taskbar vertically on the right hand side of the middle screen, it makes no sense to lose a strip across the bottom of the screen.

37 Signals says cloud repatriation plan has already saved it $1 million

redwine

Re: Is it comparable?

We deploy application, database, network and backup solution as a site template for our internal customer - we've deployed 20 sites in the last 3 or 4 (5?) years. A site runs around 500 application VMs and the solution takes 4 racks. Cloud comes in much more expensive.

Wow, turns out cloud sales can slow down – eh, Amazon, Google?

redwine

Too expensive

If you're a company with an in house tech team, cloud becomes too expensive after just a few hundred VMs.

If you're a startup and happily running from the cloud, you'll never know this and as your company grows, you'll just get raped more and more by the provider who had already locked you in from day 1 with their platform tools.

Re: Middleman

I would like to go contracting next to have a bit more freedom in my own work however when I check https://www.contractorcalculator.co.uk/contractorcalculator.aspx to see what my take home pay might be then it seems low (even when outside IR35) - am I missing something? Perhaps offsetting expenses helps a lot?

I'd appreciate your input - thanks.

Sudo? More like Su-doh: There's a fun bug that gives restricted sudoers root access (if your config is non-standard)

redwine

Re: I suspect that most didn't even know it was an option

Update sudo of course, but I can't think of any real world scenarios where this specific configuration would be used.

redwine

Re: As a ex sys-admin....

As a current sys-admin, I deploy sudo for various teams across my Linux estates to great advantage.

redwine

Re: I suspect that most didn't even know it was an option

That sudo scenario would likely be to allow a user to run commands as another specific user, not allowing a user to run commands as any user except root.

Any half decent storage system already employs tiering where it will automatically move infrequently used data to slow storage like disk and frequently used data to fast storage like SSD.

Re: Just go Linux

I updated my laptop to from Windows 7 Windows 10 a couple of weeks back (you can still do it for free) and since then it hangs within 24 hours. It's an older gen i7 with 4GB RAM - should be fine. I tried contacting M$ Support but gave up, going to install Linux this weekend, prolly Fedora as I manage RHEL clone instances for work.
