Excuse me, sir. You can't store your things there. Those 7 gigabytes are reserved for Windows 10

Devuan ships second stable cut of its systemd-free Linux

Linux

+1 for Devuan and one more for the list

+1 for Devuan for taking on such a big task. I tried to remove systemd from CentOS and pulled out hair from here and there then finally threw in the towel.

Another one for the list of systemd-free is Alpine Linux. I have replace most of my VPS CentOS VM's with Alpine Linux and have never been happier. Very light-weight, very secure and very update to date.

Let me help you with that

The government are looking for a way to pawn off legal responsibility. That is the not responsibility of website owners, ISP's, VPN's or businesses. UK gov, have your website owners add one header, then the legal responsibility is on the parents to police their kids.

The header looks like this:

rating RTA-5042-1996-1400-1577-RTA

It is up to the parent to install parental control software. No need to argue the feasibility of this on mobile devices, the legal liability is no longer yours or that of any website and no need to own the risk of managing personal details.

Re: IRC ftw

Exactly. Discord brag about never losing a single message. They log hundreds of thousands of chat messages per day into Cassandra and they will save them forever. Self hosted IRC chat retention is up to your users bots and only for channels of which they are members.

Option "D" for Derpy

I have this idea for a toy Nerf(c) gun to sell to kids. Sure, you flip one switch and it becomes a real AR-15 assault rifle, but the default position of the switch is "Kids Nerf Gun". Should I create a GoFundMe for this?

Judge uses 1st Amendment on Pokemon Go park ban. It's super effective!

What if ..

What if the primary purpose of Pokemon Go was to further the data gathering of the former Keyhole project and give Google video footage and pictures from GPS coordinates that cars can't get to?

Should the first amendment be used, even if many of the locations Keyhole sent users to gather data contained non-public surroundings? Obviously in this case, it is a public park, so it is public. I am asking about the overall intent of the project in this case.

NSA had NFI about opsec: 2016 audit found laughably bad security

jason.bourne
Linux

This can't be real

This can't be the same NSA that created SELinux. It has taken me years to get even parts of my org to use SELinux due to the complexity. I won't even contemplate suggesting MLS policies and removing the unconfined users, because I know it will be too hard. Only the NSA can manage such complicated security controls, right?

Pick Three

If your chat app of preference is private, go ahead and put three of your deepest darkest secrets into it. No, not those three. Pick three secrets that could get you excommunicated from the world if anyone found out.

New markets

People weren't willing to use windows without being logged in as an admin account, so we created anti-virus.

People weren't willing to enable a simple S25R regex to their mail servers, so now we have anti-spam.

People didn't force ISP's to enable ingress / egress filtering of IP space they own, so now we need CDN's to mitigate DDoS.

People weren't willing to build their own VPN's and force websites to encrypt everything and sue ISP's that tamper with their traffic, so now we will have a new VPN market.

Smart Phones

I have a flip phone that costs the same as 2 pints of beer. It is not registered in my name and I have never walked mindlessly into a water fountain staring at it. A single charge is good for about a week with modest to little voice usage. It can do voice and text just fine. I don't even care if they ever push out a security update.

I wager my phone is smarter than these fondleslabs.

The Cult of Chrome

If Mozilla decide to drop Firefox, I will use one of the lesser maintained forks of it. I archive the XPI's for the addons just in case. I have Chrome for the 1 website that Firefox and my addons selection do not play well together. For everything else, there is Lynx.

I just wanted to thank the author of this bot and share a pint with this half of the internet.
