AI analysis of dinosaur tracks suggests 'predator' may have been a herbivore

I think it's meant to say "our prehistoric 'herbivore'". Took me a bit of searching through the article to figure it out : )

Microsoft backtracks on lack of easy Windows browser choice

Re: Please explain to me

The sad truth is that people have some serious inertia when it comes to changing something like a browser.

In the mid 2000s, there was an unbelievable gap between Opera and the mainstream browsers. Having seen Opera, you'd have to have been crazy not to switch at once. But not enough people did.

So while Microsoft is doing awful things, sadly it might just not be true that people would switch on their own if Edge had rationally been there best choice.

Tesla to disable 'self-driving' feature that allowed vehicles to roll past stop signs at junctions

California roll

You'll rarely ever see a stop sign in most of the world, and if you do, it's there for a reason. But in California, every intersection seems to have one. Actually stopping would drive you nuts, so no one does. Tesla is just recognizing the reality of the situation, but of course you're not allowed to put it on writing.

The poor black girl in a council block

While there certainly may exist black girls who are poor and also live in council blocks, this sentence came off as unnecessarily stereotypey. Also the sentence that follows seems to imply that "sons of the shire" are neither poor nor black, nor women.

Good points about the cloud, though!

Payment cards, huh?

I remember those. I still have some in a drawer somewhere, where they go after I've registered them on my phone. Right next to a little box where I put any change that I have the misfortune of receiving in cash.

Re: There's a simple solution

> Don't shop at Amazon.

I disagree! This reasoning leads to a false dichotomy where we're weighing the benefits of shopping at Amazon against taking a stance against these deplorable practices.

The whole "vote with your money" idea is only good for silencing opposition. Should we accept their transgressions as long as somebody else is willing to do business with them? No. Do we need to avoid a useful service and disproportionately punish ourselves in order to affect change? Nope!

This is what government is for. We should call for workers' rights to be respected and for violations to have consequences.
