Re: Maths != IT

Well it depends by what you mean by most IT roles... I've been in 3rd line IT support for many years and tbh I just google, copy and paste, err I mean I diagnose the problem and identify what technical solutions are available. Now if I was to lets say get into any type of development and I mean the building blocks that we apply to create a "solution" then I would think that maths especially sadistics would be very important.

Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure

"Under no circumstances will Microsoft release details of an unpatched vulnerability unless evidence of public attacks exists, as outlined in subsection F, Exceptions to the Vulnerability Public Disclosure Process, below."

So as long as MS responds they don't need to release a patch unless the exploit surfaces or the details are known.

MS: sign this

Goo: err no

MS: well we won't release our patch until Tuesday

Goo. o O (hmmm if we break our own deadline it will just give them more ammo to press us to sign it)

Goo: releases details as stated in their terms and conditions.

Depends on your definition of pretty soon. Even if it was a minor version of 6, it wouldn't go our systems until it was thoroughly tested (especially by bleeding edgers). Re: I need to study it more

"1. why should I value a currency which is not generated based on the market need of my nation? Is it not like saying that wages of a US and Chinese worker of the same trade are same and should pay equal amount to get a bread?"

Wouldn't this solve issues of inequality? 5 dollars for a bottle of some medicine might be nothing in the US, but in China it is a lot. But I do think there needs to be much more then just global currency to make this world fair.

"2. If mining of a BitCoin is analogous to finding a gold rock, are we good paying in gold when buying a bread?"

Not quite finding a gold rock. If you think about investing in the amount of gear required to mine a single coin within a sensible amount of time and the resources it takes to run it. More like investing in a goldmine... Of course there are those who would use gear/resources which isn't theirs to do this!

Larry Ellison: Technology has 'negatively impacted' children

Mahou Saru

Blame everything else but the parents...

You can take a look at every period of time and there is something that isn't good for children. A small percentage of the well off may have good healthy life styles, but that is dependent on their parents/guardians.

You don't need to go that far back when kids where slaving away in workhouses, or that far away to find them doing back breaking work in the fields or sweatshops.

Maybe its a survival trait, but popping out the sprogs to benefit yourself (e.g. for benefits where I am from), seems like a far worse thing then spoiling them with tech imho!

Fans of dead data 'liberator' Swartz press Obama to sack prosecutor

Mahou Saru

Judge Dreads Ahoy!!!

Woah when did it become so popular to act like Judge Dread with so many individuals deciding that Swartz is guilty without it going to court? Especially when the law is open to question and does get amended frequently. If it wasn't for individuals like Swart| then maybe our societies would be something out of 2000AD.

Anyway I think the big issue isn't to do with individuals such as Swartz for doing what he did, or for Ortiz pushing as hard as she did (maybe she did it for what she thought was right, or maybe she did it to further her own agenda/career).

I think the problem is large organisations abusing the system to erode the rights of the individual, especially then their actions seem so out of proportion.

Each step we take as a society, it just seems darker then the last. With the media moguls with their copy right actions, the patent trolls acting like gangsters extorting money, and governments (US and UK) taking away our rights to preserve our "freedom", if it wasn't for people like Swartz then this world would be a much darker place then it is imho.

The bad aspects to touchy feely...

As some people have said there is no one type of management technique to rule them all. Good management is dependent on the manager, the employee and more importantly the situation, so basically the approach is different every time.

Whilst there are plenty of positives to the touchy feely management style, there are some really bad too and not just for the manager or team, but for the person in question.

For starters if a person isn't performing well, with the touchy feely style someone needs to mentor them, find out what is wrong, and/or send them onto training courses in hope that an improvement is made. Whilst this is happening either the person's responsibilities stall, or the rest of the team has to take up the slack. If the role stalls the team can look bad, if others are doing the person's work then this can easily create a bad atmosphere in the team.

For the person in question, each time they get dealt with there is a good chance that their role diminishes and basically they get sidelined out of chances to grow or worse out of a job.

Personally if I cock up I rather have my manager tell me straight to my face rather then have it drag out, of course after work have them take me to a pub a get me drunk when I've resolved the issue!

Design guru: Windows 8 is 'a monster' and 'a tortured soul'

Mahou Saru

One GUI to rule them all...

I remember reading white papers many years ago when the focus was on _users_ being able to access their data and services from any device from a familiar interface.

A single OS is great for ensuring apps are available for what ever device with minimum fuss (allegedly), but shouldn't the interface tune itself for the device it runs on?

I don't get the trend of trying to shoe horn a single GUI onto every device. Just because in some countries the scooter is the most used form of private transport, it doesn't mean that cars should have handle bars instead of a steering wheel!

Windows Phone 8 reboot woe causes outpouring of forum misery

Mahou Saru

Intermittent reboots...

Are one of the worst things to happen to a new product, and if you love your new gadget it should worry you for a couple of reasons...

1. The intermittent faults are hard to diagnose and push out a fix, mostly because companies then to be sluggish in dealing with problems that only seems affect a few users.

2. It could happen to you, especially when you don't need it to. The fault could be caused by installing an app, or using a embedded service in a certain way, and sods law states that it will bite you in the arse just when you need it the most.

Mostly have a thought for those it does happen to, if your new shiny started rebooting intermittently wouldn't you be pissed?

Apple granted patent for ebook page-turning

Mahou Saru

The patent system maybe broken, but who helped break it in the first place?

All these large companies filing these frivolous patents are overloading an already broken system. It seems like they are trying to pay off the system to stifle competition rather then protect any actual ideas.

I propose that they should limit the number of patents a company can apply for each year in a country/region.

To increase the number they can apply for each year they must invest in that country/region. So moving cash to tax dodge will count against them. That way a company will have to choose what they wish to patent, or ensure that they invest more in that region.

They can of course donate to the region itself in the form of no strings attached donations to education and research groups (non affiliated).

If a patent is voided that slot is lost.

If a company buys up another company for their patents, the parent company must ensure that they have enough slots available, by ensuring they have donated, invested, or by dropping their existing patents.

Maybe that would stop all these stupid filings?

Re: Bad news for endangered species

My point is more about aggressive dismissal such as the kind you are showing, rather then keeping an open mind and investigating with modern techniques.

Currently before human trials can even begin a lot of money and research has to be carried out, so some cures may be missed. If uneducated camel riders realised that rubbing the mould from saddles onto their sores helped, just because it was not tested in a scientific way doesn't make it quackery. One form of quackery IMHO is the absolute belief that only one method, or thing is right (kinda like religion) which personally I think science isn't about.

Rather then dismissing experiences from the past just because they don't fulfil your requirements, I was advocating investigating it.

In 100 years time who knows they might be laughing at your comments and techniques the same way as you are doing of others!
