Recall

What about Recall? When are they going to be sued by the EU? People on the insider build, as mentioned by Chris from Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility mentioned, on his latest update he was getting reports of explorer crashing with his app. Then discovered its because they've tied Recall into explored. In what would appear a way to stop people uninstalling it.

The EU won't have any of that, so I suspect they'll be another EU version out like Windows N.

The disallowing the web links in that form is normal IT security and data cleansing/data validation as they are or would be abused to send phishing emails.

This happened to our form on our site for a while which I pointed out would happen. Because no data validation on our feedback form was ever done. So I then had to manually check the replies that were all clearly phishing scams.

True. I wonder if he said it because he had a massive falling out with Paul. I don't know if they made up before he died or not. Also, he's an arse to not mention Gary considering he stiffed Gary out of CPM becoming top dog. The fact CPM did multi-tasking way before anyone else was amazing. I also never knew that Woz created the Universal Remote. He also ignored the engineers at Xerox who created the GUI that, lucky for Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, their management didn't understand what they had and let both take a peek. So both "borrowed" their GUIs from Xerox. Without them, Windows and Mac OS possibly wouldn't of existed for a long time.

She asks it questions etc to get it to help, bit like using an LLM". All the managers would fall for that and would want it tomorrow.

steviebuk Silver badge

Dislike all this AI that isn't really AI however....

....it has its uses. Playing with Jellyfin on Ubuntu headless server with CasaOS installed. Not a Linux person so have to look up everything. I decided, as I'd already filled up the 2TB drive with TV shows, that I want to switch to the 4TB one. So how do I migrate the data, should just be able to copy it over. But my Linux install has no GUI and the drives can't be seen in Windows. By the end of the night I was able to understand the Linux file system a little bit more, well at least be able to picture it. The USB drives plugged in where in specific folders instead of drive letters.

Then there was a matter of copying all folders and files from one drive to another. Could manually do in CasaOS but it gives you no feedback on where its got in the copy. So I began to look for guides online. Couldn't quite get what I wanted. Eventually finding rsync but still, no guide tailored to what I wanted. So, I reluctantly turned to ChatGPT, told it what I wanted to do and it spat out all the commands. I knew enough to not blindly trust it. But it all worked, the answer was tailored to my needs and I didn't have to ask on Stackoverflow and be ridiculed or given a response that only a computer scientist would understand.

So, although I dislike the misleading nature of all this AI marketing bollocks etc, it does have its uses.

We're in the brute force phase of AI – once it ends, demand for GPUs will too

steviebuk Silver badge

not real AI

As we all know. Sadly the people in companies that buy into it don't understand any of it. General intelligence is what we need to be worried about and we're nowhere near that. But all the LLMs aren't mentioning that as they still want their funding.

When general intelligence appears it REALLY needs to be caged and isolated because IT will do and say what it knows you want to hear so it can escape to stop you attempting to turn it off.

If you watch Robert Miles on youtube he does some good content on general intelligence. And some tests that have been done with AI thats potentially acted one way while in a lab on purpose then once released behaved totally different. Specification Gaming comes to mind, where the AI cheats to complete their goals. The AI that kept killing itself at the end of the first level because it decided it was the best option to not loose the other levels.

Quite interesting.

Buzz Word Bingo

My pitch. I'll bid £1mil, that's all you have to pay me and a mate to do it:

Transforming NHS Digital Infrastructure: A Paradigm Shift Towards a Synergistic, Scalable IT Ecosystem

Dear NHS,

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, it is imperative that the NHS aligns its IT infrastructure with cutting-edge innovations to deliver superior patient outcomes. Our proposal to revolutionize the NHS’s digital framework is more than just a technical upgrade; it’s a quantum leap toward a hyper-optimized, future-proof ecosystem that harmonizes efficiency, security, and scalability.

Key Value Propositions:

Holistic Synergization: We specialize in integrating cross-functional IT architectures to create a unified, holistic environment. Our approach ensures that disparate systems communicate seamlessly, fostering an ecosystem of synergized productivity.

Scalable Digital Transformation: As the NHS evolves, so must its digital backbone. Our modular, scalable solutions are designed to grow organically with your needs, ensuring long-term viability without the need for disruptive overhauls. Think of it as an ever-expanding ecosystem that adapts to the dynamic demands of healthcare delivery.

AI-Driven Paradigms: By leveraging cutting-edge AI, we can proactively manage and optimize the NHS’s IT infrastructure. This AI-driven approach ensures that your systems are always performing at peak efficiency, anticipating needs before they arise, and delivering real-time actionable insights.

Blockchain-Enabled Security: Our blockchain-enabled security protocols guarantee data integrity and compliance across all NHS systems. This next-gen approach to cybersecurity ensures that patient data is not only secure but also verifiable and immutable, setting new standards in data governance.

Quantum Computing Readiness: Future-proofing your IT landscape is critical. Our solutions are not only compatible with today’s technology but are also quantum-ready, ensuring that the NHS will be at the forefront of the next computing revolution.

Agile Iterative Feedback Loops: We implement agile methodologies that incorporate iterative feedback loops, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with NHS objectives. This results in a more responsive and adaptable IT environment, capable of evolving in real-time with NHS demands.

Circular Data Economy: By embracing a circular data economy, we transform data into a perpetual resource, unlocking new insights and efficiencies that drive decision-making and improve patient care.

Hyper-Converged Infrastructure: Our solution integrates compute, storage, and networking into a single, unified system, reducing complexity and streamlining operations. This hyper-convergence not only boosts performance but also reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Strategic Outcomes:

Enhanced Patient Care: Improved data flow and accessibility will empower healthcare professionals with the insights they need to provide superior patient care.

Operational Excellence: Streamlined processes and enhanced security will reduce downtime and operational disruptions, ensuring the NHS operates at maximum efficiency.

Future-Ready Framework: With our cutting-edge solutions, the NHS will not only meet today’s demands but will be well-positioned to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the NHS to create a resilient, innovative, and efficient IT infrastructure that will serve as the backbone of healthcare excellence. Let’s embark on this journey together and set new benchmarks in the healthcare IT ecosystem.

Thank you for considering our proposal. We look forward to the opportunity to discuss how we can deliver a transformative IT experience for the NHS.

Best regards

Microsoft security tools questioned for treating employees as threats

As well. Way back in 2008 at the NHS they also had bullshit censorship in emails. Swear in an email, even in a joking way to another engineer and it was auto reported to the department manager. I emailed a user about their PC once, "Its dead". The cockend reported the subject title and I got a bollocking for that "Its in bad taste". Oh fuck off.

More reason to not work in NHS IT. It had a culture of Jobs for the Boys. Corruption in IT taking bribes from large suppliers. Ignored engineer advice that actually came from users regarding usability so I told user just to report it directly as only then action was taken. Engineers that were grifting and shouldn't of been in their role. Under paying. Too many pointless managers. Only being accepted if you agreed with management and went along with their corruption.

Have we stopped to think about what LLMs actually model?

steviebuk Silver badge

I haven't tried it for a while but I asked it a out a song that was in an episode of Columbo. I thought it was a known 90s song but now think it was made for the show and can't find info on it.

Anyway. Gave it the words I can hear and asked chatgpt. It picked random songs and said those words appeared in the song. Looked up the lyrics and they never it. Tell it its wrong, it admits it then picks another random song and quotes where the lyrics are in it. But they aren't.

Finally came to a head when it said it was in a famous song from MC Hammer. Quoted the part where it was in the song. Done of the words I'd give it were in its quote and the words it quoted as being in the MC Hammer song WEREN'T FUCKING IN IT. I gave up.

The only useful thing I've found is giving it powershell scripts I find that aren't commented and asking it what it does. Most of the time it's correct. Asking it to write small scripts however, it tends to use commanders that are no longer available or that just don't exist.

I've already said how dangerous it is and how we need to check it's results at work. Copilot. It was being used for DWP work on whether people should be getting benefits or not but regularly fucked up so a human had to get evolved. It should never have been given that role in the first place.

People are using it to summerise meetings and emails. I've witness it make up stuff in a meeting that was never said. I've warned people you still need to read that report or email it's summerised as if there is an important bit of info about a customer, it may have missed that out which could result in death.

Sadly, it's still being promoted and sold by snake oil sales folk and as we all know managlement only listen to them.

"As long as we can figure out a way to pay the bills, we're making artificial general intelligence. It's going to be expensive."

Artificial General Intelligence is a whole other beast and you're nowhere near it with these LLMs. But you know its what the marketing and investors like to hear so they'll keep giving you money. AGI won't appear in my life time. And if it did, it would need to be contained, offgrid so it can't wreck everything. Re: Below Deck

From the BBC news an Italian that lives there that took the reporter out said he doesn't understand why it sunk. He's agreed with me. He said there should of been two on watch all night. He said he's been in smaller boats hit by water spouts and been fine. He's said for it to have taken it so much water on, so quickly, there must of been lots of failings.

He also said it should of been in dock. Suggesting there was enough room for it.

So despite getting the 6 down votes, seems that sailor agreed with me.

At least we see some genuine info on it. We see the captain has radar and can spot weather before it comes in. Heads back to port if it looks bad. That night watch will wake up the captain if things start to kick off.

The question is, did none of this happen or did it roll in so quick, they didn't have a chance to head back to port?

Or did a billionaire decide to override the captain and make them stay out?
